The Modernization Project Office (MPO) mission is to design, construct, and update the physical BNL plant to provide facilities where world class research can be performed. The MPO team is responsible for leading BNL’s efforts in facilities modernization.
We are seeking a talented and motivated Electrical Design Engineer to join our dynamic team. As a member of our team, you will work on diverse commercial and institutional building application projects from concept to completion. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design electrical systems for lighting, power distribution, and fire alarm systems, ensuring compliance with relevant codes and standards.
- Prepare detailed electrical drawings, specifications, and calculations using AutoCAD
- Layout and design of electrical equipment including but not limited to normal and emergency switchboards/switchgears, motor control centers, distribution and branch panel boards, disconnect switches, motor starters/VFD, etc.
- Perform construction related activities including the review of shop drawing submittals, preparation of Request for Information (RFI) responses.
- Provide assistance to project managers overseeing projects by external A/E consultants.
- Conduct site visits before and during construction to identify issues and recommend field modifications depending on site conditions.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited University or College and at least three (3) years of relevant experience in electrical systems design.
- Possess a broad knowledge of building electrical systems including grounding, lighting, lighting controls, fire alarm systems.
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC- NFPA 70) and other NFPA codes relevant to power systems, fire alarm and applicable industry and client standards.
- Ability to prepare load calculations, short-circuit availability, arc flash mitigation, motor-starting, and other electrical power distribution and lighting calculations to support the design projects.
- Excellent teamwork and customer communications skills are required.
- Must be proficient in the use of AutoCAD to produce design drawings and sketches.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point).
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or closely related field of study. Minimum seven (7) years progressively responsible related work experience that demonstrates a sound knowledge of current principles and practices in a specialized field of engineering.
- Advanced degree (e.g., Masters’ degree in Electrical Engineering).
- PMP certification.
- Proficient in Revit.
- Knowledge of medium voltage distribution and transmission.
- Development of low voltage design documents (telecom, security, AV).
- Proficient in SKM, Lumen, or any other industry recognized software to support calculations.
- Professional engineering license in New York State.
Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full annual salary range for this position is $92300 - $149317. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.

- Valid NYS drivers’ license is required.
- This is a fully onsite position located in Upton, NY.
