SUMMARY

Heat treat is responsible for bringing knife and component blanks to the appropriate hardness for fabrication production. Using high-temp crucible type ovens, conveyor ovens, and freezers for flash quench, operators will complete annealing, hardening and tempering operations to achieve the correct hardness before components move to grinding operations. The ability to follow recipes and instructions meticulously is crucial to the efficacy of the heat treat and overall durability/quality of finished Buck knives. Operators must promote an efficient, productive team environment to meet productions goals and requirements while maintaining safety at all times.

SCHEDULE

Mon. - Thurs., 4:15 PM - 2:15 AM

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Comply with all standard safety practices, company rules and policies.
  • Operate ovens and freezers in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Lifting and loading trays of metal parts throughout the day.
  • Use of calibrated hardness measuring tools. (Rockwell)
  • Verify setups, recipes and monitor temps and times throughout the heat treat process.
  • Ability to follow written instructions meticulously.
  • Accurately and thoroughly complete logging of all steps of the process.
  • Verification of complete and accurate paperwork at the oven and in all trays completed.
  • Inform Lead/Supervisor of any and all quality deviations, mechanical issues, engineering support needed and process nonconformities found.
  • Ensure quality of parts while moving at a steady pace as to not impede deadlines and checking tray quantity accuracy.
  • Area cleanliness and operator based maintenance requirements are kept updated by each shift.
  • Verify processes are being followed in accordance with the Standard Work Instructions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent communications skills and ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and management.
  • Excellent time management and planning abilities.
  • Must have the ability to discern when help is needed and to seek it out.
  • Ability to determine work priorities.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and work instructions.
  • Must possess a sense of urgency, accountability, and professionalism.
  • Able to work well independently and as a team with little supervision.
  • Must be proficient with computers, Microsoft programs.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • GED/High School Diploma or related experience and training.
  • Experience working within a manufacturing environment a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel parts; reach with hands and arms. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds for the duration of the shift.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. Hearing and eye protection is required while working on the production floor. The work environment may include office areas, manufacturing areas and warehouse/shipping areas.
