Job Summary:
Salas O’Brien is seeking an Structural Engineer II to proactively communicate and coordinate design work within the department, with other disciplines, and with external stakeholders, such as clients and vendors.
Job duties include:
• Act as Lead Structural on multi-discipline projects;
• Assist project manager on major projects;
• Independently manage projects with majority structural scope;
• Work with project execution teams of junior engineers and designers; t
• Train and help develop the skills of junior engineers;
• Multi-task on several projects and adapt to changing scopes and deadlines;
• Run project meetings and discussions and prepare associated notes and minutes;
• Review and discuss project concepts with project owner;
• Prepare efficient and organized email communications, both internal and with clients;
• Interact confidently with clients and maintain client satisfaction with project execution and deliverables;
• Develop strong professional relationships with clients;
• Actively participate and contribute to project and interdepartmental meetings to facilitate the successful completion of projects and to meet customer expectations and needs;
• Maintain an awareness of and track assigned project budgets, schedules, and scopes;
• Organize and direct project SMACC reviews for structural-only projects;
• Participate in SMACC reviews for all projects assigned;
• Understand and consistently apply or voice concerns of safety, maintenance, accessibility, constructability, and coordination;
• Learn and evaluate new design software and develop company use of current design software;
• Conduct terrestrial laser scanning site visits and register point clouds;
• Direct the preparation of construction documents;
• Detail structural framing systems for both new and modified structures;
• Coordinate work with other disciplines;
• Develop design criteria for structural work;
• Assist with the concept development of structural systems;
• Issue and record drawing submittals and revisions;
• Respond to Requests for Information and field questions;
• Participate in and present at monthly Autodesk User Group meetings;
• Check structural calculations and construction documents, prepared by self or others, for errors, omissions, and adherence to company standards for quality;
• Assist in the development of structural drafting and design standards and new production methods to improve the company's best practices, efficiency, and consistency;
• Identify, communicate, and explore solutions to conflicts and clashes;
• Recognize and assist in change order requests;
• Participate in project lessons learned meetings;
• Perform loading analysis and determination for all types of structures;
• Develop complex structural analysis models using STAAD, RISA, or other analysis programs;
• Perform finite elements analysis including development of FE models;
• Analyze and design structural systems with a broad range of proficiency in various materials, including structural steel, concrete, and masonry;
• Perform complex structural designs, including foundations of vibrating equipment, vibrating equipment support structures, large retaining walls at dump hoppers, steel hoppers, bins, and silos, modifications to concrete silos, and large process ductwork;
• Develop site civil designs including paving, grading, and drainage;
• Make structural site visits and prepare reports as required for structural condition assessments, structural reliability programs, project data gathering, and terrestrial laser scanning;
• Prepare reports on findings and recommendations for analysis studies;
• Develop calculation templates for use by other engineers;
• Possess a working knowledge of basic equipment practices;
• Continuously update and expand personal knowledge of the structural field, and of client processes and facilities;
• Assist with preliminary designs and construction quantity estimates;
• Perform shop drawing reviews;
• Evaluate contractor proposals for alignment with project Request for Proposal; and
• Evaluate contractor submittals for compliance with project specifications and drawings.
Minimum Qualifications:
• U.S. Bachelor’s degree in (or foreign equivalent) in Structural or Civil Engineering;
• 5 years' progressively responsible, post-baccalaureate experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
• A strong proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD and the ability to develop drawings;
• Proficiency with structural analysis programs (including STAAD Pro. and RISA);
• Knowledge and understanding of structural codes including the IBC, ASCE, AISC, ACI, and AWS;
• Structural engineering experience in Heavy Industrial;
• Structural engineering experience with industrial equipment (e.g., Material handling and processing, vibrations, and high temperatures).
