Position Summary
The Manufacturing Cost Accountant will report to the Plant Controller of our Design and Build company located in Livonia, MI. As our Manufacturing Cost Accountant, you will play a vital role in supporting our Design and Build team. You will be integral with establishing costing models and methods utilizing data driven from a recently implemented ERP and collaborating with all departments to understand and improve profits. You will appraise operating results in terms of costs, budgets, policies of operations, trends, and increased profit opportunities. You will partner with the Plant Controller to conduct detailed cost analysis for manufacturing processes, identify cost saving opportunities, and recommend improvements. This will involve reviewing transactions, revenues, variances, costs, and inventory. You will analyze monthly project accounting (including percentage of completion) to explain the status of project financial position, including profitability and margin along with proper revenue recognition outlined by the FASB (ASC 606).
Key Responsibilities:
- Through cost accounting, monitor and analyze manufacturing costs, margins, and variances. Drive cost reporting improvements and cost initiatives.
- Develop standard cost capturing activities that parallel and integrate with the production flow.
- Review and adjust work center labor rates.
- Establish Overhead rates for variable manufacturing costs that can be assigned to Work Centers.
- Team with production management on time studies to assure the most accurate standard labor times are used on BOMs and Production Orders.
- Drive the change from standard labor time reporting to actual labor reporting for production orders.
- Monitor and adjust cost capturing activities as needed.
- Work closely with production, procurement, and engineering teams to gather cost inputs.
- Support sales by understanding the quoting process and build models using real data to determine current and future profits.
- Provide detailed financial insights on completed and open jobs as needed.
- Maintain and improve processes and controls associated with manufacturing costs and inventory valuation.
- Manage inventory valuation and physical inventory counts.
- Provide information and analyze slow moving and obsolete inventory.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of cost accounting principles.
- Solid understanding of accounting and finance principles.
- Strong understanding of POC accounting for projects.
- Strong analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
- Organized, flexible and easily adaptable to changing conditions.
- High degree of proficiency with Excel and other Office365 products.
- Prior experience in a manufacturing environment, particularly in job-shop settings.
- Strong understanding of production flows with the relationship to Work Centers, Production Orders, bill of materials (BOM), Works Centers, and work-in-progress (WIP).
- Experience in inventory management systems in a job shop setting.
- Prior experience working with ERP software used in a job shop environment.

Competencies Required
- 5+ years of experience in manufacturing Cost Accounting.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Understanding of manufacturing and production processes.
- Knowledge of supply chain, procurement, and operations impacts on cost.
- Adept at using logic and reasoning to work through problems and analyze information.
- Proficiency with ERP systems (Acumatica is a plus)
- Advanced Excel skills.
- Makes confident, fact-based decisions.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
