Summary:
Under the general supervision of a Registered Nurse and in accordance with established policies and procedures, the Operating Room Assistant (Orderly) performs a variety of direct and indirect patient care activities in support of the surgical team. This role involves collaboration with nurses, surgeons, technicians, and other hospital staff to ensure a safe, clean, and efficient operating environment.
The OR Assistant plays a key role in room turnover, equipment cleaning, supply stocking, patient transport, and positioning. The individual must be dependable, proactive, and adaptable to the demands of the perioperative setting. This position reports to the OR Manager or a designated member of the suite management team.
Key Responsibilities:
Suite Turnover & Room Preparation:
Expedite operating room turnovers and assist with room setup in collaboration with surgical team members.Safety & Infection Control:
Ensure a clean, safe, and aseptic environment by inspecting and cleaning equipment, identifying and removing faulty equipment, and following all safety and infection control policies.Supply Management:
Assist with inventory maintenance and restocking of supplies. Independently maintain blanket warmer levels and communicate supply needs to the inventory specialist or nurse manager.Patient Support:
Assist with patient positioning in the OR. Support transport of patients to the PACU and other units under the direction of the Registered Nurse.Team Collaboration:
Communicate effectively with suite coordinators and nursing staff. Answer phones and assist in day-to-day operations as needed.Pre-Operative Support:
Aid Heart & Vascular Technical Assistants (H&V TAs) in patient prepping and clipping.Professional Development:
Complete all required annual education and training. Demonstrate initiative in learning new procedures and skills.
Qualifications:
Preferred Experience:
3–6 months of related healthcare or hospital support experience
Skills & Competencies:
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
Successful completion of orientation and training program
Attention to detail and mechanical aptitude
Ability to work effectively under pressure in a surgical setting
Must have functional vision, hearing, and hand-eye coordination
