Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

Hardware Engineering is a diverse, innovative, and collaborative group of electrical, mechanical, reliability, software and vehicle engineers. We design, build, and perfect the products which are the eyes and ears of Waymo's autonomous driving technology, and integrate those products into vehicle platforms. We're seeking curious and talented teammates to keep us moving in the right direction.

You will:

  • Architect and implement robust diagnostics infrastructure, tooling and processes to improve the efficiency of troubleshooting self-driving and base vehicle systems
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts on sensing, compute, actuator, and support systems, guiding and supporting them through diagnostics design and improvement
  • Lead analysis of sub-system diagnostics gaps and needs, informing future diagnostics investment
  • Evolve Waymo’s Diagnostics strategy through technical and organizational leadership

You have:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (EE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Computer Engineering (CE), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), or a related field
  • 8+ years experience working adjacent to or developing diagnostics in automotive, aerospace, or consumer electronics
  • Hands-on experience working directly with deployed systems (HW and SW), ideally in a fast-paced automotive or tech environment
  • Extensive knowledge in fields like Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and Mechanical Engineering, and is a quick learner when tackling new subjects
  • Working knowledge of an object-oriented programming language (C++, Python, etc.)
  • Ability to interact with both technical and nontechnical teams to solve technical problems
  • Demonstrated technical leadership with aspiration for continued technical and organizational leadership growth

We prefer:

  • A high-level understanding of various self driving vehicle systems (sensors, compute, wiring, power, vehicle actuators, chassis communication, controls, etc.), and mastery of one/some
  • Automotive-specific diagnostics experience, preferably both traditional J1979 OBII-style and modern strategies for SW-defined cloud connected vehicles
  • Familiar with modern passenger vehicle control systems
  • Demonstrated experience leading diagnostics development for a module, system, or program

Travel

  • Onsite visits to service centers and manufacturing facilities
