About the Department

Position Duties

Under immediate supervision and instruction, does manual labor.  Performs related duties as required.  TYPICAL TASKS:  Shovels ashes.  Operates ash hoppers.  Shifts and unloads coal cars.  Tends water screens.  Mixes, handles, and places concrete.  Loads and unloads materials, supplies, and equipment.  Excavates and backfills trenches, post holes, and graves.  Works hand pumps.  Cleans, scrubs, and flushes sidewalks and offices.  Cleans windows and walls.  Empties paper and rubbish containers.  Makes minor repairs.  Whitewashes walls and ceilings.  Cares for the lawn by grading, seeding, mowing, weeding, raking, and watering.  Erects concrete foundations for memorial markers and monuments.  Prunes trees and shrubbery.  Repairs roadways in cemeteries.  Assists craft workers.  Moves equipment.  Removes and burns rubbish.  Cares for tennis courts and other recreational areas.  Assists in supervision of prisoners.  Collects and distributes mail to various health stations.  Acts as messenger.  Regulates thermostatic control on incubators at police station.  Maintains landing area at the airport in good condition, including sewers, hazards, and snow removal.  Cleans outdoor toilets.
