Position Duties

About the Work Unit
The Executive Security Branch (ESB) is a special unit of the Colorado State Patrol.  The unit consists of troopers, civillian security guards and command center workforce. The ESB provides 24-hour security at the State Capital complex and at the Governor's Residence with transportation and security for Governor and the first Family.  In addition, the unit provides protection and security services to the secretary of state, attorney general and state treasurer.

Job Responsibilities
  • Conducting interior and exterior security tours of state buildings and surrounding grounds in vehicle or on foot.
  • Screening of persons’ belongings at security check-points in buildings within the Capitol Complex
  • Identifying problem areas and unauthorized personnel.
  • Identifying alarms indicating possible fire, water leaks, or other problems relating to state property.
  • Identifying safety hazards.
  • Providing services to tenants that include; unlocking doors, after hour escorts to a private vehicle, flying ceremonial flags.
  • Operate the magnetometers and x-ray screening machines at the Judicial Building and the State Capitol.
  • Submitting work orders to the DPA maintenance staff relating to various items such as burned-out lights, inoperative locks, leaking faucets that could lead to flooding.
  • Securing all exterior entrances, dock doors, windows, etc.
  • Performing both single and tandem patrol in a mostly self-supervised atmosphere.
  • Interacting with police/fire/maintenance personnel in emergency situations.
  • Writing reports about daily security activities around the different complexes.
  • Lowering State and National flags at the Judicial Building and State Capitol as required.
  • Reporting any unusual or suspicious activity throughout the Capitol Complex to the State Patrol Dispatch Center, who will alert a State Patrol Trooper to assess the situation.

Minimum Qualifications

Note, to be considered for this position, you must meet the following for consideration.

Must be at least 18 years of age. 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must be a Colorado Resident at the time of application.
  • Requires a valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • Must be willing to take job-related formal training courses.      
  • This position includes physical demands that include: vision, hearing, stooping, standing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and ability to walk up and down the stairs. 
  • This position operates 24 hr/ 7 days a week. You will be required to workday shift, swing shift, and graveyard shifts.   
  • Must be willing to drive a State vehicle to the State Patrol Academy for training. 
  • Applicants must be willing and able to pass an extensive background investigation that includes a polygraph examination, fingerprints and drug testing. Hired employees are subject to random drug testing.     
  • The background investigation is based on the following criteria, including but not limited to: driving history, criminal behavior/history, alcohol use/behavior, drug use/behavior, and integrity.  If you omit any material facts on your application, testing materials, or during the background interview or polygraph, you may be disqualified.  
  • If any disqualifying information is discovered at any stage of the selection process, you may be removed from consideration. If you fail to follow instructions during the polygraph exam you may be removed from the process.  
  • Position may require occasional travel to the State Patrol Academy.

Refer to Chapters 4 and 8 of the State Personnel Board Rules and Personnel Director's Administrative Procedures, 4 CCR 801, for more information about the appeals process.
