Position Summary
The Certified Plumber assists the Director of Plant Operations by ensuring that all plumbing systems, medical gas piping, and related infrastructure are maintained, inspected, and repaired as required. This role plays a critical part in keeping the hospital’s physical plant safe, compliant, and fully operational to support high-quality patient care.

The role requires advanced knowledge of plumbing systems, installation, repair, and maintenance in a hospital setting. Good oral and written communication skills are required, along with the ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment. Individuals may not perform all of the listed duties, or may perform additional related duties as assigned:

  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and installs plumbing fixtures, piping, valves, pumps, water heaters, sterilizers, and related systems.

  • Performs preventive maintenance on hospital plumbing and medical gas systems in compliance with safety standards and regulations.

  • Ensures compliance with plumbing codes, DNV, ADA guidelines, and hospital policies.

  • Monitors, repairs, and maintains hot/cold water distribution, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, and backflow prevention systems.

  • Maintains inventory of plumbing tools, parts, and materials to ensure timely completion of repairs and projects.

  • Provides technical guidance and training to staff on proper plumbing practices and system operations.

  • Serves as a plumbing resource to monitor system performance and recommend improvements.

  • Responds promptly to plumbing-related service requests, complaints, and emergencies, providing recommendations to the supervisor within 24 hours.

  • Completes plumbing service logs, compliance records, and time sheets daily.

  • Assists with construction and renovation tasks involving plumbing system modifications to prepare hospital areas for occupancy and equipment installation.

Skills

Demonstrated expertise in the following areas:

  • Plumbing systems (installation, maintenance, and repair).

  • Backflow prevention devices.

  • Ability to read and interpret plumbing blueprints, schematics, and diagrams.

  • Working knowledge of mechanical and building maintenance principles.

  • Knowledge of plumbing codes, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.

  • Use of hand and power tools specific to plumbing.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.

Position Qualifications

Education:

  • Minimum of High School diploma or equivalent.

  • Technical or trade school training in plumbing preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum three (3) years of plumbing experience, with emphasis on repair, maintenance, and installation.

  • Prior experience in hospital or healthcare facilities setting preferred.

  • Must be knowledgeable of plumbing codes, licensing standards, DNV, and ADA guidelines.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Current Journeyman or Master Plumber License required (state of employment).

  • Basic computer skills required.
