Under the direct supervision of the Senior Information Technology (IT) Manager, the Systems Engineer is responsible for the effective provisioning, installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of server, storage, and system compute resources for the organization. This role emphasizes professional service to all Ogden Clinic stakeholders, adherence to regulatory standards and organizational policies, and stewardship of technological resources. The Systems Engineer will ensure system reliability and performance, oversee the deployment and maintenance of hardware and software, and contribute to system standards and operational excellence with a focus on best practices. The position requires comprehensive knowledge of modern enterprise technologies, including Microsoft Windows Server, Active Directory, hybrid cloud platforms, virtualization, storage solutions, network services, automation, and disaster recovery. The Systems Engineer is expected to proactively manage systems, troubleshoot issues, and support the evolving needs of the organization.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Manage day-to-day operations of server, storage, and system compute resources by monitoring system performance and configuration; verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes; reviewing system and application logs; and verifying completion of scheduled jobs.
- Evaluate, install, test, and implement new servers, server operating systems, and application software packages; install new versions, releases, or maintenance levels of existing server operating systems and related components; maintain servers and configure hardware, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
- Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures and contribute to maintenance of system standards.
- Develop and regularly test disaster recovery plans and procedures, administer and maintain data protection and backup systems and functions.
- Provide tier III and other support to end-users and junior IT staff, including investigating and troubleshooting issues.
- Carry out performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required.
- Manage the data center and systems, including hardware, software, and equipment such as air-conditioning systems, UPS (uninterrupted power systems), environmental monitoring systems, and fire protection systems.
- Ensure high availability and optimal performance levels of mission critical host computer resources.
- Stay current with technological developments in areas of responsibility and recommend ways for the organization to take advantage of new technology.
- Effective communication at all levels of the organization.
- Timely arrival for all scheduled work shifts. Employees must call prior to the start of shift to inform manager if they cannot report.
- Remain on-call to provide support services during off hours.
- Responsibilities sometimes require working evenings, overnights, and weekends with little advance notice.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in CIS, MIS, CS or equivalent experience. Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and/or other position-relevant industry certifications are desirable.
- EXPERIENCE: 5+ years in server and systems engineering and administration in an enterprise environment. Experience in a healthcare environment is desirable.
- SOFTWARE: Productivity Software (Office Suite, Microsoft Visio, etc.).
- LANGUAGE SKILLS: Proficient in reading and interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Able to write routine reports and correspondence as well as speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
- Adequate vision required to view close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server and related technologies (IIS, Certificate Services, DHCP Server, DNS Server, Failover Clustering, Group Policy, NPS/IAS, Terminal Services, File and Print Services); Active Directory and related technologies, including ADFS; modern Identity Management concepts and technologies, including Entra AD, Conditional Access, SAML, OAuth, etc.; hybrid cloud architecture and migration strategies; VMware vSphere/ESXi and server virtualization; SAN and storage architectures and technologies (RAID, FC, DCE, etc.); network services and technologies (DHCP, DNS, PKI, SMTP, HTTP, etc.); data protection and disaster recovery methodologies and concepts; shell scripting and automation (VB Scripting, PowerShell, etc.); SharePoint Online.
- Knowledge of server hardware; Public Key Infrastructure (PKI); Microsoft Exchange Online; Citrix XenApp, StoreFront, and NetScaler; Data Center Concepts and Best-Practices; data security and privacy concepts and best practices; effective project management techniques; Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) (preferred); and Veeam Data Platform (preferred).
- Effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruption, occasionally in urgent situations.
- Experience in HIPAA or other regulated environments preferred.
- General office equipment and procedure knowledge helpful.
- Knowledge of a variety of concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field (i.e., SQL, .NET, HTML, and JQuery).
