The Town of Clayton is seeking applicants for a Equipment Service Mechanic for the Public Works Vehicle Maintenance Department. The Town of Clayton employs more than 340 full-time staff in areas including police, fire, and electric utilities. The Town of Clayton also offers a range of PT positions including positions in Parks & Rec, Library, and Cultural Arts.

Position Duties
- Diagnoses problems and performs minor and major mechanical and electrical repairs and adjustments on a variety of vehicles, small motors, generators, heavy equipment and emergency vehicles including replacing systems and rebuilding and/or adjusting components as needed.
- Completes service and repair projects as specified on work orders; documents work performed; maintains vehicle service records and identifies necessary parts for order.
- Removes, repairs and replaces brakes, tires, belts, hoses, filters, spark plugs, batteries, starters, alternators, pumps, cylinders, shafts, bearings, and electrical equipment.
- Diagnoses and repairs ignition and fuel systems, hydraulic systems, differentials, transmissions, engines, air brakes, and front and rear axle assemblies.
- Performs electrical work on automotive equipment such as diagnosing electrical shorts; installing batteries and terminals; repairing and adjusting lights; replacing wiring; testing electronic ignition systems and making necessary repairs.
- Services vehicles and equipment on a scheduled basis by checking a variety of fluid levels; changing oil, filters and plugs; lubricating equipment parts; realigning wheels and rotating tires; inspecting vehicles for wear or defective parts and replacing as necessary to ensure safe operation.
- Welds and fabricates replacement parts and metal for body repairs to vehicles and equipment.
- Performs NC vehicle safety inspections and maintains inspection records.
- Operates a variety of tools and equipment including lift jacks, tire changers, air guns, air compressors, cutting torches, welding equipment, and other hand tools in performing maintenance work.
- Performs equipment upfits for heavy vehicles, general service vehicles, and special service vehicles (police and fire)
- Maintains shop area in clean and orderly state.
- Respond to emergency callouts.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma or GED, Class C Drivers License required
- Associate degree in Automotive or Heavy Equipment Repair and Class A CDL preferred
Course work in mechanical and/or electrical trade skills, and considerable related experience in repairing automotive, construction, and specialized equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Depending on the position, the Town may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

When a salary range is posted, the actual salary will be based on relevant competencies, knowledge, skills & abilities, internal equity and budgetary considerations pertinent to the advertised position.
