Phillips Academy seeks an experienced aquatics professional to join the Academy in the newly created Aquatics Director position. The Aquatics Director is a member of the Phillips Academy Business Office and drives the management of the natatorium, overall aquatics facility, and supports the various programs offered by the Academy. The Aquatics Director will also play a key role in the front-line operations of the aquatic’s facility, will work to increase the aquatics facility revenue, and will fill in as needed with any / all direct service. This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position with evening and weekend responsibilities. The Aquatics Director is responsible for performing essential functions for continuity of athletic programming.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develops, implements, and oversees a variety of aquatics programs, including interscholastic and recreational, for the public, students, faculty, staff, including rental agreements during the academic year and Summer Session program.
- Develops and proposes pro forma budgets for third party use of the Academy’s aquatic facility.
- Assists with the development of budgetary needs of the aquatic equipment and training expenses.
- Oversees outside entity requests to use natatorium and use of facility.
- Ensures pool is compliant with all local, state, and national requirements and that all appropriate water, environmental, and health and safety standards are maintained.
- Organizes, in collaboration with the Phillips Academy Athletic department, PE department, and other departments on campus, a master calendar for use of the aquatic’s facility.
- Coaches one aquatic sports including swimming, water polo, and diving, assigned collaboratively between the Dean of Faculty’s Office, the Athletics Department and the Business Office. A stipend will be available if additional seasons are coached.
- Supervises, trains, evaluates, and advises lifeguards and is responsible for the recruiting and hiring of lifeguard staff in partnership with Human Resources.
- Provides and coordinates proper on deck supervision of staff and appropriate levels of lifeguard coverage.
- Provides safety assistance, rescues, emergency actions and first aid when necessary.
- Develops and implements ongoing lifeguard in-service training.
- Maintains aquatic facility upkeep providing the highest attention to safety for participants and employees including proper on deck supervision of staff, appropriate levels of lifeguard coverage, lifeguard attentiveness, and proper lifeguard rotations.
- Keeps detailed records of in-service training, water testing, accident reports, critical incident, and incident reports.
- Other duties and responsibilities as needed and as assigned.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Certification and Licensing Requirements:
- Must have a minimum of three to five (3-5) years commensurate experience in an aquatics management position and experience coaching.
- Red Cross Lifeguard Certification required.
- Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of safe practices and procedures as they pertain to pool operations, supervisory concepts and techniques, customer service practices and principles.
- Experience with an Omega timing system preferred.
- Excellent communications skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain courteous, effective relationships with Academy students, faculty, staff, and other community members, as well as members of outside public organizations and groups.
