About the Department

The purpose of this classification is to supervise the day-to-day activities and operations involved in maintenance of Cobb County Detention Center.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Incumbents in this class supervise and direct co-workers in the completion of construction and/or maintenance related projects and have a higher level of expertise in a specific area.

Position Duties

Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff: develops and oversees employee work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control; compiles and reviews timesheets; approves/processes employee concerns and problems and counsels or disciplines as appropriate; assists with or completes performance appraisals; directs work; and acts as a liaison between employees and management and trains staff in operations, policies and procedures.

Organizes, prioritizes and assigns work: prioritizes and schedules work activities in order to meet objectives; ensures that subordinates have the proper resources needed to complete the assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff to assist with complex/problems situations and provide technical expertise; and provides progress and activity reports to management.

Ensures adherence to established safety procedures: monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; places safety cones, markers, or signs to alert employees/citizens of work areas, wet floors, or other potential hazards; locks/secures chemical storage areas; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.

Supervises and conducts maintenance inspections of buildings, equipment, and facilities to identify potential problems, unsafe conditions, needed repairs, or other situations requiring attention: issues work orders for maintenance/repair work; and reports damage/vandalism, potentially hazardous/dangerous situations, or other problems to appropriate personnel.

Supervises building maintenance, repair, and modification projects: writes and receives work orders; prioritizes and schedules work; determines and coordinates necessary equipment, materials, and manpower to complete projects and work orders; plans most efficient use of resources; assigns projects and work orders to appropriate staff; redirects or reassigns workers in response to emergencies or changes in priorities; monitors progress in meeting project deadlines; and responds to problems or emergency situations.

Monitors, participates in, and inspects work activities to ensure operational efficiency: coordinates general maintenance and repair work on buildings, equipment, and related facilities; and monitors and assists staff and/or contractors in performing skilled, semi-skilled, and manual work involving building maintenance, building construction, carpentry, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, or other projects.

Ensures adherence to established safety procedures: monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individual; and initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required, supplemented by some vocational or technical training in one or more building trades; supplemented by three years of experience in building construction, maintenance and repair.

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License

Other Qualifications

Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).

Sensory Requirements

Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors

Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
