Job Description
PARADISE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
Job Title: FOOD SERVICE ASSISTANT
Position Purpose:
To assist in the preparation of food items; to serve food in a school cafeteria, snack bar or satellite food service unit; and to maintain food service equipment and facilities in a safe, clean and sanitary condition. Employees in this classification receive direct supervision within a framework of well defined policies and procedures. This job class performs the more routine functions of food service operations as assigned.

Essential Job Duties:
The following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
1. Prepares and/or assists in the preparation of foods such as sandwiches, salads, salad dressings, entrees and desserts.
2. Slices, assembles, mixes, stirs, blends and/or measures a variety of ingredients used in food preparation activities.
3. Serves food.
4. Portions food into individual servings accounting to established guidelines.
5. Sets up serving counter/lines, tables and food warmers with appropriate food items and supplies.
6. Cleans serving counters, dining tables, food containers, beverage machines, French fryers and other food service equipment and machines.
7. Cleans and stores trays, plates, utensils, pots, pans and serving equipment.
8. Assists other food service staff and/or works with student helpers to ensure that food is prepared on time and in a safe and sanitary manner.
9. Maintains clean, neat, orderly and sanitary work area.
10. Assists in monitoring and directing the work of student assistants.
11. Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability:
Knowledge of:
• Basic kitchen and food serving utensils and equipment.
• Basic methods of food preparation.
• Basic cleaning methods and procedures.
Skill and Ability to:
• Effectively apply proper sanitation and safety requirements associated with food preparation and serving operations.
• Read at a level sufficient to perform assigned duties.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Perform a variety of food preparation tasks requiring a high degree of manual dexterity.
• Safely and effectively learn to operate food preparation and serving equipment and machines.
• Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties.
• Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
Training and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be: ability to read and write at a level sufficient to perform assigned duties.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
• Require the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend. Require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.
• Require the ability to stand for long periods.
• Require the ability to walk long distances.
• Perform work which involves the frequent lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects which may approximate 50 pounds and may occasionally weigh up to 100 pounds.
• May be required to work in extreme weather conditions.
• May be required to work around loud noise.
• Is subject to inside environmental conditions.
