MOS Codes: 1171 (Marine Corps), 3E451 (Air Force), 92W (Army)
Education and Experience: A High School diploma or GED or higher and three (3) years experience in the maintenance, construction, or repair of water lines and mains, including one (1) year in a lead capacity.
Licenses and Certificates: Class “C” Water Certificate of Competency issued by TCEQ required. Texas Class “C” Driver’s License or equivalent from another state.
Position Duties
Under general supervision, supervise, coordinate and participate in work activities of assigned crew engaged in the heavy construction, maintenance and repair of water lines and services.
Minimum Qualifications
Supervise and participate in medium to heavy construction of water lines and services. Involves: Receive daily work orders and discuss assignments with supervisor. Estimate and prepare equipment and material requirements list and arrange for delivery of materials, equipment and traffic control necessary to complete work orders successfully. Check area for damage and underground utilities to be identified before excavation. Coordinate work with other utility entities. Order safety equipment specific to assignment including traffic control, self-contained breathing apparatus, trenching, etc. Supervise and participate in the installation, maintenance and repair of water service lines, installation of forms, the pouring/finishing of concrete. Ensure safety procedures are followed when working in trenches, excavations, or confined areas.
Supervise and participate in laying pipes and connections. Involves: Supervise installation and maintenance of fire hydrants, cutting and machining of pipes and wet connections (tapping) to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations. Lay pipe and connection for new or existing systems. Repair, remove or replace damaged or obsolete lines. Ensure the repair of main leaks and breaks. Repair and replace valves in accordance with specifications, trade and water regulations. Inspect work in progress or completed work to ensure compliance with specifications. Ensure all equipment is operated and maintained safely. Respond to emergency calls. Prepare activity and maintenance logs, keeps records and prepares reports.
Supervise assigned staff. Involves: Schedule, assign and review of operational and procedural activities. Prioritize and coordinate crew activities. Instruct, guide and check work. Appraise employee performance. Provide training and development. Enforce personnel rules, regulations and work standards. Counsel, motivate and maintain harmony. Recommend hiring, termination, transfers, discipline, merit pay or other employee status changes.
