About the Department
JOB SUMMARY:
To perform skilled work in the installation, repair and maintenance of refrigeration, heating, ventilation, evaporative cooling, air conditioning equipment, and energy management control systems in support of the District maintenance program.
SUPERVISION:
Receives general supervision from an HVACR Supervisor.
Exercises no supervision; provides work instructions to HVACR Assistants.
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Troubleshoots, repairs, maintains and services all types of heating, refrigeration, air conditioning equipment, and energy management systems.
- Inspects and tests heating, refrigeration, air conditioning equipment, and energy management control systems to ensure proper functioning.
- Utilizes a variety of power equipment and hand tools in the performance of assigned tasks.
- Estimates time and material costs to complete assigned job.
- Maintains appropriate records involving time, labor and materials.
- Installs, replaces and repairs valves, fans, motors, gaskets, filters, belts, fuses, low voltage wiring, controls, thermostats, switches, gauges, tubing and pipes.
- Maintains and repairs hydraulic pneumatic compressors and air control systems related to air conditioning and energy management control systems.
- Cuts, bends and joins tubing and pipes.
- Insulates pipe of heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, and energy management control systems.
- Repairs and install duct work and chassis covers.
- Connects motors to control panels and control panels to power.
- Inspects, disassembles, repairs and maintains hot water and forced air heating and ventilation equipment.
- Maintains and makes minor repairs to low pressure steam vessels, boilers and other steam equipment in cafeterias and District kitchens.
- Adjusts and installs valves, thermostats, fans, pressure regulators and pumps.
- Flushes boilers and descales tubing.
- Makes repairs requiring a variety of skills such as bolting, riveting, screwing, welding, brazing and cutting of all types of materials.
- Cuts threads and assembles pipe and tubing to other components of air conditioning, heating and refrigeration equipment.
- May direct the work of an assistant.
- Requisitions, orders and stores parts and materials.
- Operates light truck to travel to job sites.
- Keeps vehicles neat and organized and stocked with parts and materials.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION/TRAINING
Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and education needed to acquire the knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics listed above.
- Completion of a formal apprenticeship in the heating-air conditioning-refrigeration trade and Energy Management Control Systems (EMCS).
-OR-
- Three years of paid experience performing installation, maintenance, and repair activities of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and energy management control systems.
(Substitutions: Completion of a heating-air conditioning-refrigeration course of training at a state-licensed technical or trade school or an associate degree in heating-air conditioning-refrigeration may be substituted for one of the three years of experience.)

- High school graduation or the equivalent.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES/REGISTRATIONS (At time of appointment and during employment)
- Universal Certification issued by an EPA-approved agency, to recover refrigerants during the maintenance, service, or repair of small appliances, high-pressure equipment and low pressure equipment.
- An appropriate, valid California driver's license.

ADDITIONAL SALARY INFORMATION: This is a non-exempt position, Regular Classified Salary Range 42A. Most positions in this class work 8 hours/12 months. The probationary period for employees in this classification is six (6) months (or 130 working days of paid service).

THE EXAMINATION:

Performance Examination. WEIGHT: Pass/Fail
Only qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process.
Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit.
Candidates will be notified in accordance with the Personnel Commission Rules.
This eligibility list will be active for a period of (1) year.
