TDC Specialty Underwriters, Inc. (TDCSU), an Excess & Surplus lines subsidiary of The Doctors Company (the nation’s largest writer of physicians’ malpractice insurance based in Napa, California), offers a broad range of professional and management liability insurance products focused on healthcare providers, institutions, and organizations.  TDCSU has been in existence since January 2016 and is seeking to hire professionals to support its continued growth.  TDCSU is headquartered in Farmington, Connecticut. TDCSU candidates have a desire to contribute to a collaborative, motivated and professionally ambitious work environment.

TDCSU is currently seeking a Claims Associate to handle excess liability claims for all product lines including: medical professional liability, general liability, employment practices liability, managed care errors and omissions, directors and officers liability, and life sciences products liability.   

 

Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of this position are to investigate, evaluate and resolve various excess liability claims across multiple underwriting segments while gaining exposure and experience to professional liability claim handling functions.

Working under the direct supervision of the Vice President and acting within authority appropriate for this position, the Claims Associate is expected to:

  • Effectively communicate with underlying carriers and/or insureds to obtain consent; negotiate settlements; and utilize appropriate alternative dispute resolution methods.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in claim file and adhere to claim documentation standards.
  • Prepare reports to senior leadership which address liability exposure, coverage issues, litigation strategies, and loss development. 
  • Secure satisfactory results and timely closures of claims files.
  • Interact with other units within TDCSU including underwriting, actuarial, finance, and operations as needed.

Preferred Candidates:

  • Possess a basic knowledge of the legal system, litigation, claims trends, and industry practices.
  • Superior communication and customer relations skills.
  • 1 – 3 years of legal or claims handling work experience.
  • Adjuster license.

Requirements:

  • College graduate.
  • Ability to obtain an Adjuster license. 
  • Proficiency with Excel, Word and demonstrated aptitude with Windows based operating systems.
  • Occasional work travel.
