Summary:

The Cafeteria Assistant fulfills the mission of the Catholic school by assisting and serving in the school cafeteria and lunch program within the framework of the school’s philosophy and organization. The Cafeteria Assistant is responsible for assisting the cafeteria manager in implementing the school’s food program within the guidelines established by the school. The School Cafeteria Assistant supports cafeteria operations by actively monitoring via circulating and/or constant walk-through observations of students during mealtimes and managing the distribution and accounting of take-out food options on a weekly basis. This role does not involve serving food directly but ensures student safety and accurate handling of take-out meals.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Observe student behavior in the cafeteria to maintain a safe and respectful environment and report issues to appropriate faculty if necessary. The assistant will not sit behind the kitchen counter or in chair during lunch hours when children are present. Take seated breaks only when children are absent or tasks are finished.  The assistant will ambulate amongst the children and teachers maintaining the environment, assisting where needed, and constantly sanitizing areas. 
  • Monitor student behavior in the cafeteria to maintain a safe and respectful environment and report issues to appropriate faculty if necessary.
  • Assist teachers with cafeteria rules/needs and students with seating and orderly conduct.
  • Provide utensils/napkins and monitor microwave use – assist children, as needed, with microwave use. 
  • Coordinate the weekly distribution of take-out food options, ensuring accurate tracking and accountability.
  • Maintain records of take-out food orders, deliveries, and distribution.
  • Assist with organizing and storing take-out food items as needed.
  • Maintain cafeteria cleanliness by organizing tables and common areas (not serving food); sanitize the microwave daily.
  • All staff members are expected to follow the school's dress guidelines to maintain a professional and respectful environment. Please review the Teacher handbook for guidelines. 
  • Report any concerns related to student behavior or food distribution to appropriate staff.
  • Adherence to the Code of Conduct and the Faith and Moral Policy is mandatory.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Assists other personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities. 
  • Responds to inquiries of students, staff and the public for the purpose of providing information and/or directing to others.
  • Remove and/or report pest concerns.

Requirements

  Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Education
    • High School diploma or equivalent. 
    • Minimum of 1 year of experience in food service.
    • Food Handler’s Certificate 
  • License and Credentials
    • Reliable transportation
    • Valid driver license
    • Valid vehicle insurance

Minimum Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Skills are needed for various tasks and may need updating as job conditions evolve. The job requires skill-based competencies such as operating equipment used in the school cafeteria, maintaining accurate records, and providing customer service.
  • KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions. Required job competencies include knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and basic kitchen tools and equipment.
  • ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate.   
  • The position requires specific ability-based competencies, including collaborating effectively within a team, adhering to deadlines and schedules, and engaging constructively with children.
