The Cold Weather Shelter Program Specialists will perform the perform the duties associated with the daily operations of the Cold Weather Shelter (CWS) under the guidance of the Program Supervisor. This role is essential in ensuring a safe, welcoming environment for individuals experiencing homelessness, promoting a non-judgmental and compassionate service.
This position is seasonal part-time from late-October through mid-March and comes with pro-rated holiday pay and accruals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Complete intake forms
- Maintain records, including bed night data
- Ensure the shelter is safe and secure, including monitoring sleeping areas
- Communicate shelter rules and seek an understanding of the rules
- Monitor shelter activities from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm or 6:00 am to 10:00 am and coordinate with overnight security who will monitor the shelter from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am
- Assist with preparing and serving meals
- Leave any relevant information in the logbook for the next shift
- Maintain the shelter's cleanliness, including sweeping and restocking
- Once a week facilitate laundry of sleeping bags
- Communicate with clients, co-workers, and volunteers
- Collaborate with volunteers and social service
- Respond to phone calls and emails
Work Environment:
Shifts are scheduled from 6 AM to 10 AM and 6 PM to 10 PM.
Weekend and evening work required
Minimal Requirements:
- Openness and a non-judgmental attitude towards individuals experiencing homelessness.
- A genuine passion for supporting people and addressing their needs.
- Acceptable Criminal History Report
- Reliable and punctual
- Maintain a high degree of confidentiality relative to work performed
- Effective communication skills and a professional attitude
- Ability to work independently, prioritize work, and manage multiple priorities on deadlines
