The Harnett County Public Library is a member of NC Cardinal, a resource sharing consortium consisting of 8 regional library systems, 40 county library systems, 6 municipal libraries, and 1 special library for a total of 234 physical branches throughout North Carolina. The Resource Sharing Library Program Specialist is responsible for managing the resource sharing system, delivering materials to affiliate and branch libraries, preparing library materials for shipment, and receiving items shipped form NC Cardinal consortium libraries. 


Position Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

  • Operates, loads, and unloads a 2 passenger transit van.
  • Runs bi-weekly round trip routes to branch libraries in Angier, Dunn, Coats, and Erwin
  • Runs weekly round trip routes to Boon Trail Community Center and Library, Benhaven Public Library and Anderson Creek Public Library
  • Selects items from library shelves for shipment to affiliate, branch, and NC Cardinal consortium libraries
  • Sorts items for delivery to affiliate and branch libraries
  • Utilizes software to track all library materials shipped and received
  • Unpacks deliveries and sorts items to appropriate or assigned destinations
  • Tracks lost in transit items
  • Inventories materials used for resource sharing
  • Submits lost and damaged package claims to FedEx.
  • Picks up and distributes USPS Mail.
  • Responsible for branch deposit transportation and providing back-up deposit maintenance support in absence of Branch Manager
  • Delivers and picks up interdepartmental mail daily
  • Serves as back-up NC Cardinal contact to the Main Library Branch Manager
  • Communicates with Resource Sharing partners statewide using online message platforms, email, and phone
  • Stays up to date on and contributes to developments in resource sharing policy and procedure
  • Assists and supports library staff in all matters related to resource sharing
  • Provides assistance to patrons in person, by e-mail, or by phone; assists users in finding materials and information; instructs patrons in use of on-line catalogue, copier, and Internet; and answers a variety of reference questions using Library materials and Internet access.
  • Works at the circulation desk; uses automated circulation database; registers patrons and issues Library cards; sends out overdue notices; sorts and returns borrowed materials to proper location; reads and adjusts book shelving; organizes and maintains periodicals and vertical files; and takes and processes interlibrary loan requests.
  • Provides couriers services to library branches to support resource sharing activities.
  • Must be able to drive and operate a vehicle as needed.
  • Serves as Manager on Duty when assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK: 

  • Associate’s degree in library science, information science, or a related field;
  • One (1) year of related work or volunteer library experience preferably as an employee; 
  • Or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: 

  • Knowledge of books, materials, equipment, and resources in area of assignment
  • Knowledge of the operation principles and practices of a public library and practices of library science.
  • Knowledge of the use of computer systems including on-line systems, computer software, printers, and other peripheral hardware.
  • Skill in providing customer service.
  • Skill in communicating, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to be creative at work.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to use all assigned equipment with appropriate skill.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate successful programs and services relating to assigned collection of materials.
  • Ability to assess and assist patrons of all ages and demographic groups.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, volunteers, officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to utilize a variety of systems and methods to acquire materials or provide services requested by patrons.


Other Qualifications

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to perform medium work frequently exerting up to 40pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects; and occasionally requiring to exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects.  This work also involves the physical abilities of balancing, crawling, crouching, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, kneeling, lifting, using mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, performing repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, expressing ideas by the spoken word, and walking.  An incumbent must also possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, to operate a computer terminal, for extensive reading; for visual inspection of books and materials at distances close to the eyes, and for use of measurement devices.
