About the Department
The Auto Mechanic performs skilled maintenance, repair of automotive equipment, heavy machinery and related equipment.
Position Duties
- Repair and maintain equipment such as automotive trucks, buses, tractors, fire apparatus and maintenance equipment.
- Perform complete major and minor tune-ups.
- Perform inspections and diagnosis on a variety of equipment and verifies sources of problems of failures based on vehicle condition, driver complaints, visual observations and/or test equipment indicator.
- Repair all types of auxiliary systems including, but not limited to transmission, differentials, carburetors, distributors, electrical, steering, hydraulics, exhaust, brakes, wiring, cooling, racks, axles and other major heavy equipment components.
- Perform routine vehicle and equipment preventive maintenance inspections; check and replace fluids, tires, belts, and hoses; lubricate moving parts and replace burned out lights.
- Road test vehicles and certify mechanical work to ensure they are in safe running condition.
- Maintain proper supplies and stock levels.
- Prepare records of repair activities, requisitions parts, and materials from fleet control.
- Assure that the work area is clean and orderly manner.
- Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Methods, tools, materials, and procedures used in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment;
- Standard practices and equipment of the automotive mechanic trade;
- Preventive maintenance and inspection techniques used in automotive repair;
- Standard practices, methods, tools, and equipment of the trade;
- Hazards and safety precautions of the trade (OSHA);
- Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.
Skills and Abilities:
- Use of tools and equipment used in automotive repair;
- Diagnose defects in and repair general automotive equipment;
- Operate fueling, lubricating, tire changing, related service tools and equipment;
- Operate field service and tire trucks to service vehicles in the field;
- Handle refrigerant for vehicles;
- Perform all physical requirements of the position;
- Follow written and oral instructions;
- Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications;
- Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public. Have ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions.
Other Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED, two (2) years of experience in repairing/servicing automotive and heavy equipment or currently enrolled in an automotive repair class in an accredited trade/vocational school; and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Special Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona CDL (Commercial Driver's License) or be able to obtain one within a year of employment;
- Must possess mobile air conditioning (MACS) Certificate or equivalent;
- Obtain or able to obtain ASE Certification in an automotive field within one (1) year;
- Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License;
- This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends;
- Must have a current Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card or be able to obtain the Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card within ninety (90) days of hire. Failure to maintain a current Level 1 Clearance Card will result in removal from this position.
