About the Department


The City of Jefferson is currently accepting applications for Firefighter. We are seeking highly qualified, career-oriented individuals who are ready to join our team and serve the community. This position is responsible for protecting life and property by controlling and extinguishing fires, performing rescues, providing medical care, mitigating hazardous materials incidents, and assisting other departments as needed. While firefighting and rescue work are the most challenging aspects of the job, a significant portion of time is also dedicated to training, maintaining facilities and equipment, conducting inspections, and educating the public.

To be considered for this position, applicants must already possess the following certifications and licenses:

  • Valid State of Missouri Firefighter I & II Certifications

  • Valid Missouri Emergency Medical Technician License (EMT-B or EMT-P)

Applicants who do not hold these certifications and licenses at the time of application will not be considered at this time. 

The starting annual compensation for firefighters is $50,000 plus and holiday pay, ensuring a rewarding package for your dedication and service.




Position Duties

Responds to incidents such as fires, alarms, vehicle accidents, hazardous material incidents, emergency medical calls and technical rescues. Lays, connects, and operates hoses and other extinguishing equipment; directs fog and water streams; raises and climbs ladders; uses chemical lines and extinguishers; ventilates buildings with forcible entry tools; removes persons from danger; administers medical care; and extinguishes fires to protect life and property.
 
Checks equipment and apparatus to ensure good working condition and reports defects; performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire station buildings and grounds; cleans, waxes, polishes, and otherwise maintains assigned equipment in order to ensure equipment is prepared for a response.
 
Maintains a high level of operational readiness by participating in a continuing program of training, physical fitness and instruction, including attendance at scheduled drills and classes in order to simulate skills and ensure that firefighting, EMS and HazMat tasks are performed efficiently and effectively. 
 
Provides emergency medical care at the scene to patients, which may include providing support to EMS crews providing patient care and transport to emergency medical facilities.

Assists in performing life safety inspections of commercial, industrial and residential buildings, and tours high hazard facilities.

Conducts fire safety classes, and works with the public to increase fire safety awareness and provide for fire prevention. Conducts other life safety education with the public. Provides public education and information on safety and fire prevention, including station tours, community events, school visits, and correct installation of car seats.

May be assigned to a wide variety of special assignments in the department including: special inspector and Lead SCBA Technician.  Additional team, committee and special project assignments are expected throughout the department.

May assume the role of the Driver, after departmental approval,  in his/her absence.
 

Minimum Qualifications

Must have a valid Driver's License and the ability to obtain a Class B Missouri Driver's License with air brake endorsements within 12 months of hire.

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and basic computer skills. Must be at least 18 years of age; possess a valid Missouri Emergency Medical Technician License (EMT-B or EMT-P); and hold valid State of Missouri Firefighter I & II Certifications.

Must be able to pass a NFPA 1582 compliant health physical and begin the series of required vaccinations before the candidate may begin employment.

Physical: Ability to use strength and stamina to work in a superheated environment while wearing up to 100 lbs. of full protection gear including self-contained breathing apparatus; work in extreme fluctuations in temperatures; strength to operate heavy tools and equipment up to 80 lbs. for up to 30 minutes; swim with endurance and proficiently; stoop, bend, and lift continually over time; strength and endurance to remove an unconscious adult from a hazardous situation. Must have the ability to remain comfortable in the water, move, and self-rescue while wearing a personal flotation device.

Mental:Ability to work with one or a large group of severely injured, maimed or dead persons; control stress and follow directions in a life threatening environment; work in confined spaces and at heights greater than 10 feet; enter dangerous areas and perform dangerous tasks; and awareness under pressure of changing fire or hazard conditions. Ability to communicate, understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and work within the confines of a fire station for 24 hours or more.
 

Other Qualifications

Firefighters work 48 hour shifts on a 48/96 rotation.

Applicants must live within 25 miles and 30 minute reporting time within 12 months of hire.
