About the Department

This is high level technical and administrative work to assist in directing the activities of the Traffic Services Division of the Public Works Department. This requires leadership and communications skills to direct daily activities in the areas of traffic signing and pavement markings. This position is in the Traffic Services Division, reports to the Traffic Services Supervisor, which is under the Principal Traffic Engineer of the Public Works Department. 

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following examples are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.)
 

  • Assists the Traffic Services Supervisor in directing the installation, operation and maintenance of traffic signs and pavement markings, as well as other traffic control devices in unincorporated Douglas County.
  • Assists in promoting a safety culture where employee safety is a top priority, actively integrated into daily operations and embraced from within by staff who all receive ongoing safety training. 
  • Organizes crews for daily activities based on direction from the Traffic Services Supervisor.
  • Inspects traffic control devices to ensure compliance with the Manual on Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and Douglas County Construction and Design Standards for all county roadways.  Oversees and assists with the design, fabrication, installation and maintenance of traffic control devices.
  • Assists with the training of others in the use of variable message signs, rectangular rapid flashing beacons, striping equipment and other computer devices as well as develop programs to assist with the duties of the division.
  • Assists with the design review, traffic control plan review and construction plan review for the installation of traffic signs and markings.
  • Develops and maintains many of the record systems for tracking traffic services material inventories, work-orders, etc.
  • Locates applicable training courses for traffic personnel and makes recommendations to the Traffic Services Supervisor.
  • Serves as part of the on-call staff for emergencies, carrying a pager/phone for a week at a time, as needed.
  • Assists Traffic Services Division with labor and installation and other duties during emergencies, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  

  • A high school diploma or GED is required. 
  • Four years of field experience or education involving the MUTCD including signing/striping design, fabrication, installation and maintenance.
  • One year of supervisory or lead work experience.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:
  • Must possess a State of Colorado Class (B) Commercial Driver License upon hire. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment. Incumbents in this position must meet the Department of Transportation physical exam and drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • Requires ATTSA or IMSA Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) Certification.  Requires IMSA Level I & II - Signs & Markings Certifications. (Level III Preferred).
  • A combination of training certifications from providers other than ATTSA and IMSA may be considered.
