About the Department

Under limited supervision, this 40 hour per week position, supervises and performs firefighting and fire prevention activities. Responds to emergency situations as required, providing assistance to superiors in controlling fire scenes or performing other specialized duties as assigned. Performs the necessary functions and operations to efficiently and effectively protect the lives and property of those in need of assistance. Supervises subordinates through the chain of command. Reports to the Fire Rescue Deputy Director.


 

Position Duties

Responds to fire alarms and other emergencies within assigned fire district and in other districts with automatic mutual aid or when requested by proper authorities to respond within the county or other areas; takes full command of scene until relieved by a higher ranking officer.


Performs supervisory, firefighting, technical rescue and fire prevention work. Works hand and hand with other scheduled firefighters as well as station volunteer firefighters


Performs station duty and general station maintenance along with other station firefighters as required by daily duty schedule. Posted duty schedule shall be followed unless an emergency call last too long to safely complete daily duty. All daily duty not completed on its assigned day shall be completed at the earliest convenience of the entire on duty crew.


Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers advice and assistance as needed.


Ensures all equipment and apparatus are kept in proper and safe condition; implements corrective action for equipment in need of repair or maintenance; sees that all proper testing is implemented and corresponding records maintained.


Ensures subordinate personnel are trained in required courses and maintain continuing education credits as needed. Is trained as, and ensures that personnel are trained as efficient safe firefighters and all necessary training for new hires is in effect at designated times if applicable as well as all are trained as Medical First Responders with necessary annual updates. Assists the training officer with notification of needed training and coordination of  training as required.


Participates in fire drills; attends required training courses and seminars.  


Receives, reviews, prepares, and / or submits various documents, including, various logs, run reports, training records, memos, correspondence, etc.


 Effectively uses computers, and all information technology related equipment as needed.


Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the Fire Service Director. Deputy Director Fire Chief, co-workers, subordinates, other county employees, volunteers, fire personnel of other jurisdic­tions, South Carolina civic and community organizations, business / property owners, medical / hospital personnel, and the general public.



Essential Safety Functions


Every manager/supervisor is responsible for enforcing all safety rules and regulations.   In addition, they are responsible for ensuring that a safe work environment is maintained, safe work practices are followed and employees are properly trained.


It is the responsibility of each employee to comply with established policies, procedures and safe work practices.  Each employee must follow safety training and instructions provided by their supervisor.   Each employee must also properly wear and maintain all personal protective equipment required for their job.   Finally, each employee must immediately report any unsafe work practices or unsafe conditions as well as any on-the-job injuries or illnesses.


Additional Job Functions


Performs general administrative work, including but not limited to attending meetings, preparing reports and cor­respondence, entering computer data, copying and filing documents, etc.


Conducts pre-fire surveys, Performs hydrant testing, maintenance and performs related duties as needed. A posted daily duty schedule shall be followed by all on duty members


Minimum Qualifications

Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent with vocational / technical training in the fire service/technology area, supplemented by a minimum of two years of service as a Lieutenant with the Lancaster County Fire Rescue or equivalent.   Must possess all required certifications for Lieutenant with Lancaster County Fire Rescue, plus possess I-400.  Must be a minimum NFPA Fire Officer II.  Candidates must also possess a valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement or a SC Class E commercial license. Any disciplinary action above a counseling form within the past six months will rule a candidate ineligible for consideration for promotion. If no candidate has all eligibility requirements, the most qualified candidates will be interviewed and the successful candidate must complete all required training before ending the probationary status.
