About HDC
The New York City Housing Development Corporation (HDC) is a public benefit corporation and the nation’s largest municipal Housing Finance Agency. HDC seeks to increase the supply of multi-family housing, stimulate economic growth, and revitalize neighborhoods by financing the creation and preservation of affordable housing for low-, moderate-, and middle-income New Yorkers. HDC’s programs support the construction and preservation of multi-family affordable housing in New York City.
 
Position Summary:
In the service of HDC leadership, the Policy & Analytics Division provides policy advisory, financial and data analytics, and operational planning services to increase HDC’s capacity to build and preserve affordable housing and advance the life outcomes of residents living in HDC housing. 
The Policy & Analytics Data Analysis Intern will support the Division’s Data Management Unit (DMU), which will inform the Corporation’s portfolio and market surveillance efforts. This will include helping the DMU conduct outreach to managing agents within the portfolio to collect rent roll submissions, pulling data summary reports, and working on ad-hoc analyses. The intern will report to the Director of Data Management but will work closely with the Corp’s Data Scientist.
 
Recent projects on which the team has worked on include: monitoring rental arrears and financial trends in multifamily housing, analyzing citywide eviction patterns, implementing a data governance program, identifying applicable local emission compliance requirements for HDC buildings, and integrating external data sources into the team’s database.
 
Responsibilities: 
  • Assist the team in the administration of HDC’s rent roll submission process
  • Provide technical support to users submitting rent rolls; troubleshoot and solve permission, contact, and data quality challenges
  • Execute data extraction, cleaning, tabulation, and visualization as needed
  • Perform data entry for rental assistance contracts
  • Communicate findings to the P&A and DMU teams along with other key stakeholders
  • Undertake special projects/initiatives as requested
       
      Required Qualifications: 
      • Strong coordination, organization, and verbal and written communication skills
      • Excellent attention to detail and time-management skills
      • Ability to quickly learn new technology
      • Familiarity with MS Excel and MS Outlook
      • Enrolled in an associates/bachelors’ program. This internship is open to all majors, but see “preferred qualifications” below for coursework areas most relevant to this opportunity
       
      Preferred Qualifications: 
      • Experience working in customer service or in tech support
      • Familiarity with R (Tidyverse), Python (Pandas), or other data analysis software (e.g. Stata)
      • Commitment to the public sector
