About the Department
The Accounting position is expected to go into effect October 1, 2025, pending the approval of the 2026 Budget.

This is responsible specialized clerical work compiling, maintaining and verifying diverse statistical purchasing, legal, fiscal and bookkeeping records and accounts. Work includes verifying, maintaining and inputting of accounting, financial, purchasing, statistical, legal or other information into a computerized accounting system. Work details vary according to the department or work area assigned.
Employees are expected to exercise reasonable independent initiative and judgment in solving most problems that arise within their assigned work area. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed by an immediate supervisor.
Position Duties
Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation. - May receive, distribute, and process invoices for approval; contacts vendors in case of any discrepancy
- Responds to internal and external inquiries and provides assistance and guidance
- Process and allocate departmental credit cards (pcard) purchases
- Receives, audits, and processes documents from various departments
- Processes collection reports accurately and expediently and compiles data to record revenue
- Enters and maintains new or updated information into the City’s financial accounting or payroll systems
- Monitors, reviews, analyzes and distributes reports and documents
- Maintains and update records
- Performs related work as required
- Processes payroll deductions, retro salary increases, wage garnishments, direct deposits, and IRS levy orders
- Assists Payroll Supervisor in processing bi-weekly and pension payrolls
- Assists the timekeepers with any inquiries
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency
- One (1) to three (3) years of clerical accounting and/or payroll experience. Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job-related field, may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
If claiming Veteran's Preference, candidates must attach a DD214 Member 4 form, and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form (J-204) to the online application.
As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.
PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The position is generally sedentary. Employees sit most of the time, but may walk or stand for brief periods of time.
