Position Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assists the Parks and Recreation Department with various tasks to help meet the program services and goals; duties will vary according to job assignment.
- Works independently to plan and coordinate general recreation programs, activities, excursions, and special events; collects and distributes supplies and materials for special events.
- Conducts and supervises various recreation programs and activities; verifies that supplies, equipment, and facilities are in order, and recommends supply needs to the supervisor; monitors participants’ behavior and resolves issues within scope of authority and training.
- Monitors recreation environment and reports all safety conditions and security issues; may train and coordinate the work of other team members.
- Organizes activities; schedules, inspects, and prepares venues; maintains discipline at indoor and outdoor recreation facilities; assists with supervision of staff.
- Helps with the scheduling of staff and overall supervision of City facilities.
- May instruct various activities which may include, aquatic program, arts, crafts, and games, explaining the rules and techniques; evaluates individual performance and the effectiveness of instructional programs.
- Sets up and maintains recreation facilities for special events and scheduled programs; maintains general appearance of park facilities by cleaning areas in and around the facility, sweeping floors, checking, and restocking restrooms, arranging equipment and other general maintenance duties.
- Maintains attendance, participant, and program records as necessary.
- Responds to requests for information within the scope of authority and training.
- Assists with distributing program information, brochures, calendars, and flyers.
- Supports the relationship between the City of Rosemead and the constituent population by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND two years of experience as a Recreation Leader or Aquatic Staff; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge of:
- City policies and procedures.
- City policies rules and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using municipal recreational facilities, programs, and equipment.
- Record keeping and file maintenance principles and procedures.
- Supervising and controlling recreation activities and participants.
- Coordinating work activities and training recreation ream members and volunteers.
- Promoting a positive recreation environment and good personal behavior.
- Providing effective customer service and dealing tactfully and courteously with the public.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Class C California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record. May be required to obtain American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate or equivalent.
Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors at City recreation facilities and venues. May be required to travel to various sites, locations, and/or events. Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours; employees are required to assume duties of a disaster worker in the event of a locally declared emergency.
