IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.

We are looking for a Staff-level Physicist with experience in the application of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) to ion trapping and experimental control.  The successful candidate will be part of a team focused on development of photonic interconnects testbeds for quantum computing.  Experience in ion trap design, simulation, and control and optical alignment is preferred.  As a member of the Quantum Interconnects department of IonQ, you’ll be part of an interdisciplinary team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.

Responsibilities:

  • Planning and execution of trapped ion physics experiments with core understanding of laser-atom interactions.
  • Work closely with a project manager to develop and execute project system requirements, staffing, and schedule.
  • Lead small research team in early-stage investigation of new optical designs, hardware testing and experiments to advance IonQ quantum computing.
  • Serve as photonic interconnects expert on cross-functional team responsible for advancing PIC-based light delivery to generate single photons from trapped ions.
  • Work alongside software and engineering staff to incorporate system control and automation.
  • Rapidly navigate and embrace new developments, using a data-driven approach for design improvement while maintaining commitment to on-time delivery.
  • Deliver high-quality work product where decisions and actions significantly impact and influence the direction and effectiveness of overall team.
  • Communicate and align regularly with project management to ensure on-time delivery of project commitments.

You’d be a good fit with:

  • MS/PhD in experimental physics or related field, with graduate-level experience in ion trapping.
  • 8+ years of professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working familiarity of optical grating couplers and/or the use of metalenses in atomic physics systems.
  • Experience with PICs and/or PIC-based light delivery systems.
  • Experience with design-of-experiment and control of complex laser and optical systems.
  • Deep understanding of atomic and trapped ion physics..
  • Experience with controlling experiments and components and interfacing systems and components to local area networks using Python and Java script.
  • Experience designing, writing software for and running AMO systems and experiments that use complex laser light pulse sequences.
  • Prior experience leading small (2-3 person) teams of researchers/engineers.
  • Demonstrated experimental experience with one or more of the following specialties: quantum computing, quantum networks, atomic physics systems, diffraction limited optical systems, lasers, fiber components and fiber coupling, light control and modulation (AOMs, EOMs), quantum sensors, atomic clocks, vacuum systems.

You’d be a great fit with:

  • 5+ years of experience with bringing up and running ion trapping experiments
  • Experience in physics simulations of trapped ion quantum systems (e.g., QuTiP)
  • Experience in fiberized packaging of PIC devices.
  • 5+ years of experience with AMO experimental control
  • Experience delivering a product or completing a project involving the management of a small team of researchers/engineers.
  • Experience using the Artiq or similar framework to control quantum hardware
  • 5+ years of experience in applying research to relevant industry problems
  • Engineering or systems engineering experience in transforming a complex physical system into a product
