Who are we looking for?    

We’re looking for an Environmental Assessment & Permitting Specialist to lead our practice in Calgary, Alberta. The candidate will leverage their existing experience in Alberta and other Prairie provinces to drive technical excellence and growth for our environmental assessment and permitting service line.  

Working with our biological, physical sciences, human environment, and engineering teams, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading and contributing to environmental assessments and permit applications for a variety of projects. The successful candidate will lead the growth of the environmental assessment & permitting team in Calgary and will also focus on providing technical leadership for environmental planning studies, management plans, and regulatory permit applications.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:  

Health, Safety, and Environment: Monitor and review performance against health, safety, and environment (HSE) key performance indicators (KPIs) and patterns of behavior within the area of responsibility. Take action to improve performance and to resolve noncompliance with the organization's HSE policies, procedures, and mandatory instruction. 

Environmental Assessment: Leads environmental assessments under federal, provincial and territorial legislation. 

Permitting: Leads the development of major permit applications, as relevant to individual area of expertise.  

Client & Customer Management (External): Manage client relationships or oversee relationship management with a group of more transactional clients and customers. 

Organizational Capability Building: Use the organization's formal development framework to identify the team's individual development needs. Plan and implement actions, including continuing professional development specified by professional or regulatory institutions, to build professional capabilities. Provide informal training or coaching to others throughout the organization in own area of expertise to enable others to improve performance and fulfill personal potential. 

Personal Capability Building: Act as subject matter expert in an area of policy, regulation, or operational management for the team. Maintain external accreditations and in-depth understanding of current and emerging external regulation and industry best practices through continuing professional development, attending conferences, and reading specialist media. 

Community of Practice Management: Participate in and contribute to a community of practice in a defined area of expertise or consulting to build own capability and develop innovative practice among colleagues. 

Request for Bid Solicitation/Proposal/Tender Response: Gather information and resources, draft and complete proposals, and fulfill all process requirements (in terms of deadlines, documentation, etc.) in response to complex bid solicitations, request for proposal, and request for tender to create the best chance of being awarded the contract. 

 

Other Duties:

Develops and mentors senior leaders and/or rising talent within the organization. 

Works with project directors, managers, and teams to establish and improve Business Group requirements; interfaces heavily with the national Impact Assessment and Permitting service line to identify skill sets required for delivery of impact assessment and permitting projects. 

Attracts strategic hires to develop the team, especially in key areas where subject matter expertise is important to allow for GHD to support Enterprise and regional action plans. 

Pre-positions for key projects and clients, and develops opportunities for new or expanded scope. 

Develops approaches for responses to RFPs, scope of work packages, budgets, and progress reports.  

Undertakes Project Director role on key projects, maintaining billable work in the 60% range. 

Drives project teams to provide successful and technically sound project deliveries to meet and exceed client and GHD requirements. 

Adheres to GHD Management Systems for Safety, Integrity, Quality, and Environment 

Drives positive client interaction, as verified through client surveys. 

 

What you will bring to the team: 

University Degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or equivalent.  

10+ years of experience in developing complex environmental impact assessment and permitting project, including 1-3 years of leadership experience.   

Experience supervising and directing people and other resources to achieve specific end results within limited timeframes.
