CLASS DEFINITION
A Fuel Technician Specialist performs diagnostic, inspections, testing, and repair work on a variety of fuel dispensing equipment and storage tanks. Work of this class involves no lead or supervisory responsibility.
Employees receive moderate supervision from a technical supervisor. Employees in this class may work shift work including weekend hours and are subject to 24- hour callback in case of emergencies. Work is performed outdoors where incumbents are exposed to inclement weather, unpleasant odors, noise, dirt and greasy conditions. Work requires strenuous physical exertion including lifting, bending, crawling and periods of prolonged standing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION
On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:
EDUCATION: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possess a GED certificate.
AND
EXPERIENCE: Have three years of experience in the maintenance, testing and repair of vehicle fuel dispensing, Underground Storage Tanks/Aboveground Storage Tanks (UST/AST) tank systems and other related equipment.
OR
EQUIVALENCY NOTES: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: Have a valid Maryland Class C Non-Commercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit. PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE OR LEARNER'S PERMITS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Must be certified by the Maryland Department of Environment to perform third party inspections.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems for gasoline and diesel equipment and the techniques of their repair.
- Knowledge of tools and equipment used to repair a variety of different makes of fuel dispensing equipment and other mechanical equipment.
- Knowledge of safety practices and protocols in the Maryland Department of
- Environment’s COMAR regulations.
- Knowledge of practices and methods required to use equipment.
- Ability to learn new methods and practices required to use new/updated equipment.
- Ability to read and understand service manuals, parts catalogues, schematics and written work rules.
- Ability to prepare and maintain records.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
BACKGROUND CHECK
Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.
PROBATION
All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month period.
ELIGIBILITY
Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
EDUCATION ACCREDITATION
Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
SELECTION PROCESS
All candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their applications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination. The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity. It is essential, therefore, that you give complete and accurate information on your application. EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position. You may be required to complete supplemental questions to further examine specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities of the position.
