As a Residential Care Specialist, you will provide essential overnight support to survivors of domestic violence and their children in a safe, secure, and trauma-informed environment. This role is vital to the smooth and compassionate operation of the shelter, ensuring clients feel supported, respected, and safe during their stay. Working as part of a collaborative team, you will help maintain a stable, welcoming environment while offering direct support, guidance, and crisis intervention as needed.

 

*This position will work an alternating work week schedule alternating between 3 nights one week and 4 nights the next


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide general supervision and ensure the safety and well-being of residents in accordance with agency policies and trauma-informed principles.
  • Respond calmly and appropriately to crisis situations, de-escalating when necessary and providing emotional support.
  • Document interventions, services provided, and incidents accurately and in a timely manner in Osnium.
  • Support residents’ nightly needs, including answering questions, providing guidance, and assisting with basic daily living tasks.
  • Complete curfew checks and follow established shelter safety and security protocols.
  • Review end-of-day communications (emails, incident reports) to remain current on shelter activity and client concerns.
  • Facilitate shelter intake and exit procedures, including completion of paperwork and orientation to the shelter environment.
  • Perform cleaning and housekeeping duties to ensure a hygienic and comfortable shelter environment, including dishes, laundry, sweeping, mopping, dusting, sanitizing, and preparing resident rooms.
  • Answer Crisis Hotline calls during overnight shifts, providing empathetic listening, safety planning, and appropriate referrals.
  • Occasionally assist with typing and preparing Temporary Restraining Orders (TROs) as needed.
  • Model respectful, non-judgmental communication and uphold professional boundaries with clients at all times.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles and survivor-centered practices (preferred).
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and crisis intervention skills, with the ability to stay calm under pressure.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team while also functioning independently overnight.
  • Knowledge of domestic violence dynamics, community resources, and relevant laws (preferred).
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and maintain accurate records.
  • Proficient typing and computer skills to accurately document services and assist with paperwork
  • Demonstrated empathy, cultural sensitivity, and ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

 

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Valid California Driver’s License required
  • Basic Computer literacy (Microsoft office, database entry)
  • Prior experience working with survivors of domestic violence, trauma or vulnerable populations preferred
  • Six months of experience providing personal care, managing housekeeping tasks, client advocacy, social services, shelter work, or lived experience to be able to support and guide clients effectively preferred 
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background check including DOJ/FBI livescan

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting – up to 2 hours, not continuously
  • Standing – up to 4 hours, not continuously
  • Walking – up to 2 hours, not continuously; bending over – up to 1 hour, not continuously
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Occasional exposure to residents with emotional disturbances or sensitive situations

 

Rate of Pay: 

Part Time

$20.00 - $25.00 per hour DOE
