Certified Nursing Assistant

 

FLSA Status: Exempt

 

Reports To: Teacher, School Principal and School Nurse

 

Supervises: None

 

Employment Terms: 10-Month Full-time Position (190 Contracted Days)

 

Grade: D/G4

 

Position Summary

The Certified Nursing Assistant is responsible for performing direct student care and student care related activities, including, but not limited to: personal care, activities of daily living, and other clinical skills necessary to meet the objectives stated in the individual student plan of care. These require tasks and other administrative duties and responsibilities will be assigned and directed by the Registered or Licensed Practical Nurse and Classroom Teacher.

CNA’s may help deliver the educational component by assisting the student with hand over hand and other similar physical exercises with respect to the student(s) physical limitations in demonstrating his/her ability to perform the educational tasks as instructed by the teacher(s). CNA’s assigned to a 1:1 role are primarily responsible for student safety, direct and indirect student care and should actively facilitate the student’s learning. CNA’s shall not do classroom coverage in the absence of the classroom teacher. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the School Principal, Teacher and School Nurse.

Essential Functions 

  1. Maintains confidentiality of medical and educational related concerns in the school setting.
  2. Collaborates with student’s school nurse, teachers and therapists to help provide the optimal educational experience for the student.
  3. Demonstrates a professional behavior when interacting with school staff, parents and students.
  4. Self directed and works within the scope of the job description.
  5. Takes directives and follows through with a high level of student care.
  6. Demonstrates effective communication with the student, supervising nurse, classroom teacher, co-workers, and others.
  7. Seeks assistance/guidance/information as needed.
  8. Safely manage and operate equipment. Clean and maintain the equipment.
  9. Recognizes and reports abnormal signs and symptoms of common diseases and conditions with student(s).
  10. Reports students concerns.
  11. Takes and records vital signs, reports abnormal findings.
  12. Sensitivity to student’s emotional, social and mental health needs.
  13. Makes observations of student’s environment to ensure the safety and comfort of clients.
  14. Performs basic personal care skills such as mouth care, skin care, grooming, dressing, toileting, incontinence care and feeding.
  15. Uses assistive devices in ambulation, eating and dressing.
  16. Performs range of motion and positioning.
  17. Follows established school department policies and procedures with regard to: attendance, work hours, safety procedures.
  18. Maintains professional dress and appearance including wearing of school issued ID and name tags.
  19. Maintains professional, courteous, helpful attitude.
  20. Maintains current CPR/First Aid and CNA certifications.
  21. Assume other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Teacher, School Nurse and/or Principal.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Understands student’s rights and promotes independence.
  2. Knowledgeable of spread of disease causing microorganisms and uses policies and procedures to prevent spread of microorganisms.
  3. Demonstrates ability to identify and implement safety and emergency procedures.
  4. Identifies and demonstrates principles of body mechanics.
  5. Provides messenger, escort and transport duties as needed for student care.

 

Qualifications, Education and Experience

  1. High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  2. C.N.A. certification.
  3. Documentation of job specific training/competency.
  4. Certification in Basic Life Support (CPR/First Aid) or successful completion within 6 months of hire. 
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Physical Requirements

  1. This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force.
  2. Work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, sitting, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting.
  3. Work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision.
  4. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly.
  5. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
  6. Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities.
  7. Work regularly requires exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
  8. Work occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and wearing a self contained breathing apparatus.
  9. Work is generally in a quiet location (e.g. library, private offices).


Special Requirements

  1. Position may require the operation of division-owned/leased motor vehicles; the incumbent’s driving record will be subject to periodic review and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual. 
  2. All candidates must successfully undergo the following pre-employment screenings:
    1. Tuberculosis Screening
    2. Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation
    3. State Police Criminal History Investigation
    4. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)/National Criminal History Investigative Search

 

Evaluation Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie

County School Board’s policy manual.
