About the Department
The City of Avondale is currently seeking a Fleet Heavy Equipment Technician in the Public Works Department.
This is a full-time, non-exempt position with benefits.
The Fleet Heavy Equipment Technician is responsible for performing general repairs and diagnostics on engines, transmissions, drive trains, hydraulic systems, electronic systems, and other related components of heavy-duty vehicles, off-road construction, and solid waste equipment. Primary duties typically include diagnosing and repairing engine problems, testing vehicles for proper operation, estimating time and cost associated with repairs, and other duties associated with the repair and maintenance of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
Position Duties
Diagnose and repair all types of heavy gasoline and diesel-powered equipment including, but not limited to, solid waste trucks, dump trucks, street sweepers, rollers, tractor trailers, forklifts, buses, equipment trailers, and various construction equipment.
Diagnose, maintain, repair, rebuild, or adjust air, electric, and hydraulic brakes, hydraulic and electrical systems and components, computerized engine and transmission controls, drive trains, gas and diesel engines, cooling systems, air conditioning, and steering component.
Weld, fabricate, and modify vehicles, equipment, and components.
Repair and replace tires for heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
Test vehicles, trucks, and equipment for proper operation by operating/driving and using test equipment.
Maintain the cleanliness and safety of the work area.
Consult with supervisors on vehicle problems, diagnostic issues, and performance.
Maintain accurate work records.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED equivalency.
Two (2) years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic with metal fabrication experience, including welding and cutting.
An Arizona Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and a valid DOT medical examination certificate are required upon hire.
An ASE Certification is required within six (6) months of hire.
Other Qualifications
Work requires the ability to read manuals and instructions.
Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Work requires the ability to write service reports and parts requests.
Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Work requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of policies, standards, and precedents.
The incumbent in this position may contact others within the organization. These contacts may involve similar work units or departments within the City, which may be involved in decision-making or providing approval or decision-making authority for purchases or projects. Vendors and suppliers may also be called upon for information on purchases, supplies, or products. Meetings and discussions may be conducted with customers, brokers and sales representatives. The employee must maintain regular attendance. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
