Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies is a nationally recognized, independent center for ecological and
ecosystem research. We study complex socio-ecological systems to provide society with solutions to
vexing problems.
Cary Institute seeks a Development Consultant to help us build new relationships with donors on the
West Coast. The Consultant will ideally be based remotely and have significant experience and
relationships with West Coast private foundations and individual funders.
Responsibilities
The Consultant will perform the following services/activities:
- Support positioning of Cary Institute with donors, including working with Cary Institute staff on strategy development and approach.
- Connect Cary Institute staff to 10 or more high-net-worth individual donors or foundations focusing on but not limited to the Bay Area and/or West Coast that would be receptive to introductions to Cary staff, pitches, and/or proposals.
- Secure meetings with a minimum of 6 prospects for Cary Institute leadership, who plan to make two trips per year to the West Coast.
- Review or edit materials (i.e., proposals, letters, emails) for donors as needed.
- Communicate regularly with President, Development staff, and other staff as necessary.
- Joshua Ginsberg, President, and/or Nicole Baker, Director of Development, shall provide direction to the Consultant. Additional services to the services described above may be agreed upon between the parties through written documentation.
Deliverables-The Consultant shall provide Cary Institute with:
- Introductions to 10 or more donors on the West Coast.
- Secured meetings with 6 or more donors.
- Follow-up with donors, and Cary Institute staff on an ongoing basis, as appropriate for each donor relationship to support introductions and relationship building.
Qualifications
- 10-15 years of experience in philanthropy or institutional fundraising for international NGOs or similar organizations.
- Proven and active relationships with donors on the West Coast.
- Strong track record of securing funding from philanthropic foundations and individual donors.
- Demonstrated success in proposal development.
- In depth experience with philanthropy for environmental issues, ecology, and climate change.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Excellent writing, communication, and relationship-building skills.
Compensation Range
The compensation for providing the above services will be $100-125 per hour. The total compensation under this agreement will not initially exceed 40 hours (approximately 2-3 hours per week, intermittently) and will be provided in return for satisfactory completion of the deliverables. The period of performance will be from September 15, 2025 to March 15, 2026. The end date of this agreement may be extended upon mutual agreement and written amendment.
