TxDOT’s Austin District is seeking a General Engineering Tech I or II based out of our Travis East Maintenance Section, in Austin TX. In this role, you will support engineering projects that improve safety, efficiency, and connectivity across our region. In this role, you'll work alongside engineers and planners to assist in the design, inspection, and maintenance of transportation systems—from roadways and bridges to transit facilities and traffic operations.
$5,000 Recruitment Bonus Available!
You may qualify for a one-time recruitment bonus up to $5,000 if you have a Class “A” CDL License (preferably with no transmission restrictions) at time of hire. You must maintain 12-month of continuous employment with TxDOT and meet all other conditions. Current and Previous permanent employees (does not include Summer Internships) do not qualify for the Recruitment Bonus.

This position is for ONE General Engineering Tech I or II. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.
Salary Plan/Grade:
General Engineering Tech I: A19 ($48,244.00 - $76,028.00/yearly)
General Engineering Tech II:: A20 ($51,158.00 - $81,351.00/yearly)

This position performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and complex maintenance contract inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Essential Duties:
Responsibilities of a General Engineering Tech I or II Include:
Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
Operates light and heavy equipment; performs preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment; performs roadway maintenance.
Oversees complex maintenance and spot improvement contracts.
Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Additional Responsibilities for a General Engineering Tech II:
Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
Interprets plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) policy and clarifies procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience:
General Engineering Tech I: 4 YEARS in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience.
General Engineering Tech II: 6 YEARS in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience.
(Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).
Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Commercial Driver’s License

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment
