JOB DESCRIPTION
The Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for providing patient care under the direction of a physician. This position is deemed safety-sensitive and will adhere to all policies associated with this designation. The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this job.
- Document appropriately in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) according to clinic policy and direction from clinic management
- Receive and direct phone calls, schedule appointments, check in patients, obtain necessary patient information to update patient records, and ensure all forms and consents are completed by patients
- Check-out patients, assist with the referral process, and arrange laboratory services
- Prepare patients for examination, take vitals, and record patients' health history in the EMR
- Perform routine specimen collection and tests
- Conduct intake procedures; this involves the assessment of injury or symptom, learning about past medical problems of the patient, and other pertinent facts the doctor needs to identify and treat the problem
- Conduct patient telephone assessment, advice, and instruction, and document the interaction in the EMR
- Answer phone messages promptly and document messages per clinic procedure
- Based on clinical procedures, MA may call patients with test results
- Complete surgical scheduling and boarding slip documentation
- Assist physicians with medical treatments, procedures, and exams
- Assist with preparing rooms, equipment, and instruments that the physician uses.
- Manage inventory of medical supplies and stock exam rooms with appropriate supplies
- Disinfect exam rooms between patients
- Instruct patients in the collection of samples and other tests.
- Document all interactions in the patient's medical record
- Collect data from patients and medical records to improve health care services.
- Timely documentation, according to the current Franklin County Medical Center’s Timely Documentation Protocol, is required
- Maintain confidentiality by protecting sensitive, proprietary, or confidential information. Adhere to HIPAA privacy and security requirements
- Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols
- Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required to maintain Infection Control Standards as set by the facility
- Performs other related duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS / ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES
- A working knowledge of nursing, healthcare safety, state and federal regulations, and regulatory processes
- Knowledge of uses and care of laboratory equipment; medical terminology; basic physiology; protocol for aseptic procedures, and basic typing skills or computer mechanics
- Knowledge of CPT & ICD-10 coding procedures
- Knowledge of medications and injection procedures
- A service-minded work ethic with a drive to meet patient care needs and a positive, upbeat attitude when encountering ambiguity and change
- Ability to interact effectively with people who have widely differing backgrounds
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Medical Assistant, Certified Nurse Assistant, or Licensed Practical Nurse certificate preferred
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- One year of experience in a medical office environment is preferred
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Regular and predictable attendance
- Regularly required to sit, bend, stoop, and stretch
- Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment
- Requires a normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports
- Frequently able to lift/carry up to 50 pounds
- This job's specific visual abilities include reading and interpreting reports and data
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to access and navigate throughout the department within the organization's facilities
- Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing, accessing necessary information, emailing, and other similar tasks
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- FCMC operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The operational needs of departments may require that you be available to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, to meet the needs of patients.
- Potential exposure to blood, body tissue, fluids, contagious diseases, and hazardous waste.
- Occasional exposure to bodily injury, loud/unpleasant noise, unpleasant odor, and emotional or physical stress.
- May be required to work day or night in a confined environment or in varying temperatures.
- The employee generally works in typical office conditions, with a quiet noise level.
- Occasional exposure to emotional or physical stress.
- The employee works in a medical office and hospital setting.
- This position requires travel a minimum of one day per week to additional clinic locations to support patient care. The Medical Assistant will work alongside providers at these sites, performing necessary clinic treatments and ensuring all treatments are documented accurately and timely within the patient’s record at the primary clinic location.
- May be required to travel to other facilities to obtain training as necessary.
