We’re looking for a Head of Risk Management to define and lead SumUp’s risk strategy across Europe. You’ll play a pivotal role in safeguarding growth, driving a robust risk framework, and building trusted relationships with SumUp’s European regulators such as the Central Bank of Ireland, the FCA in the UK and Bank of Lithuania.

 

What you’ll be doing

  • Serve as the designated PCF holder for Risk in SumUp’s Irish regulated entity, acting as the primary point of engagement with the Central Bank of Ireland.

  • Lead the design, implementation, and ongoing enhancement of an enterprise-wide risk management framework, tailored to the Irish entity and aligned with our other European regulated entities.

  • Oversee the identification, assessment, and mitigation of financial and non-financial risks across business lines, ensuring effective controls and a strong risk culture.

  • Define and monitor the entity’s risk appetite and key risk indicators (KRIs), providing clear reporting and insight to senior management and Boards.

  • Chair risk governance committees, ensuring timely regulatory reporting, escalation, and adherence to governance standards.

  • Build, mentor, and develop a high-performing risk team while partnering with business leaders to embed risk considerations into strategic decisions and change initiatives.

  • While our core focus is on fintech and payments, familiarity with risk management in banking environments will be highly regarded, bringing additional perspective to our regulatory engagements and enterprise-wide frameworks.

What we’re looking for

  • Proven senior risk leader with 8–10 years in risk management, including at least 3–5 years as Head of Risk (or equivalent) in a regulated financial services environment.

  • Deep expertise in European financial services regulation and hands-on experience in fintech, payments, or electronic money institutions.

  • Trusted regulatory partner with a strong track record of engaging European regulators and presenting effectively to boards and audit committees.

  • Builder and people leader experienced in scaling and leading high-performing risk teams (10+ people) and embedding robust risk frameworks across organizations.

  • Strategic and analytical thinker able to balance long-term vision with practical execution, using data and insight to guide decision-making.

  • Executive presence and collaboration skills — a confident communicator who can influence senior stakeholders, foster cross-functional alignment, and thrive in complex, fast-changing environments.

  • Open to frequent travel across SumUp’s European locations to collaborate with teams and stakeholders

This is a regulated and mandated role (PCF) that requires pre-approval by the Central Bank of Ireland.
