JOB CLASS: SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST
LEVEL: I
POSITION TITLE: PSYCHOLOGIST
CLASS DEFINITION:
Positions within this class are characterized by their ability to provide services that enhance academic performance; design strategies and programs to address problems of adjustment; consult with other educators and parents on issues of social development, behavioral and academic difficulties; conduct psycho-educational assessments for purposes of identifying special needs; provide psychological counseling for individuals, groups and families; and coordinate intervention strategies for management of individual and school-wide crises.
POSITION DEFINITION:
Under the general supervision of the Director of Student Support Services to provide psycho-educational screening and assessment as needed. Serves as a resource to staff members and parents in planning the education of a variety of special needs students. Provides counseling to students, parents and families. Performs a variety of related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Consultation
• Collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to find effective solutions to learning and behavior problems.
• Help others understand child development and how it affects learning and behavior.
• Strengthen working relationships between teachers, parents, and service providers in the community.
Evaluation
• Evaluate eligibility for special services.
• Assess academic skills and aptitude for learning.
• Determine social-emotional development and mental health status.
• Evaluate learning environments.
Intervention
• Provide psychological counseling to help resolve interpersonal or family problems that interfere with school performance.
• Work directly with children and their families to help resolve problems in adjustment and learning.
• Provide training in social skills and anger management.
• Help families and schools manage crises such as death, illness, or community trauma.
Prevention
• Design programs for children at risk of failing at school.
• Promote tolerance, understanding, and appreciation of diversity within the school community.
• Develop programs to make schools safer and more effective learning environments.
• Collaborate with school staff and community agencies to provide services directed at improving psychological and physical health.
• Develop partnerships with parents and teachers to promote healthy school environments.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
• Holds a valid and current California Pupil Personnel Services Credential with an authorization in School Psychology.
• Master’s Degree in school psychology, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements.
• Successful experience in the field of education or school social work.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

various office equipment and machines
___ Able to conduct verbal conversation in English and other designated languages
___ Able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels)
___ Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, walk
___ Able to stand on hard flooring for sustained periods of time
___ Able to walk on hard flooring for sustained periods of time
___ Able to climb slopes, stairs and ladders
___ Able to push and/or pull a variety of tools and equipment
___ Able to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and 75 pounds occasionally
___ Able to push and pull objects weighing up to 200 pounds
___ Able to sustain strenuous manual labor for the employee’s normal work day
___ Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder external rotation and internal
rotation
___ Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder abduction and adduction
___ Able to exhibit full range of motion for back flexion
___ Able to exhibit full range of motion for elbow flexion and extension
___ Able to exhibit full range of motion for hip flexion and extension
___ Able to exhibit full range of motion for knee flexion
___ Able to exhibit manual dexterity needed to operate a computer and other classroom
and office equipment
___ Able to work with cleaning solutions, disinfectant and sanitizers without allergic
reaction
