Founded in 1977 to help Latino’s learn basic skills, pass the civil service exam and obtain higher paying post office jobs, Instituto has grown to a flourishing educational center serving over 14,000 Chicago families per year.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Director of Adult and Continuing Education reports to the COO and is responsible for directing and coordinating the ESL (ELA), ABE, and ASE. The Director also oversees and directs child and family services programming (Family Literacy & After School). The Director of Adult and Continuing Education coordinates with the Director of Career Pathways and Community Affairs and other academic coordinators, for the successful offering of services.
The Director of Adult and Continuing Education provides leadership, management, and direction to the Adult and Continuing Education Department. The Adult Education Department is a comprehensive program of free classes for adult students who need to learn English or improve their basic literacy skills, obtain a GED certificate, or prepare for the Citizenship exam. The mission of the Adult Education Department is to provide educational programs that help adults gain the knowledge, skills and guidance necessary for transition to college and career pathways.
This position directs, manages, and provides leadership in all instructional and academic support systems within the Adult Education program. In addition, it promotes and coordinates courses, curriculum, and course development and evaluation. This administrative position, which is confidential in nature, has managerial responsibilities over all faculty, students and clerical staff associated with the program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reviews courses to ensure that they comply with the goals and objectives of the program.
- Coordinates the revision of instructional materials every academic year.
- Develops, reviews, and implements policies and procedures which affect the program.
- Directs and supervises Adult Education and Continuing Education faculty and clerical staff.
- Recommends new hires and disciplinary measures when necessary.
- Provides resources for staff to accomplish the goals and objectives of the courses taught.
- Coaches and advises staff in areas of development and improvement.
- Regularly evaluates all adult educators and provides constructive feedback on their work.
- Verifies employee time and attendance records.
- Conducts regular meetings and advises staff of activities and/or changes within system and funders including but not limited to ICCB.
- Coordinates effective registration and ensures all classes are filled and adequately staffed.
- Adjusts teaching and/or class scheduling to ensure courses are conducted in most effective manner.
- Reviews and verifies adult educators student attendance and grading records for accuracy and completeness.
- Attends and participates in various meetings/committees as they relate to the Adult Education, District or Citizenship.
- Completes various on-going projects of the program by writing and preparing reports, proposals, and or related reviews.
- Issues necessary correspondence to staff and community agencies as needed.
- Prepares departmental budget and participates in agency wide budget meetings.
- Monitors expenditures and ensures they are within budget parameters and recommends actions to stay.
- Assists students in completing their academic goals and objectives.
- Provides additional guidance and assistance as individually needed.
- Reports concerns/complaints within the program to Human Resources and follows established procedures for reporting and investigating those concerns/complaints.
- Collaborates with the CEO & President regarding general operational processes and submits required reports
- Participates in Senior Leadership meetings, Board meetings, and agency wide events which at times include weekends and or evening hours.
- Actively participates in modeling and fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect and dignity for all.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s Degree preferred.
- Five (5) years teaching in a higher education setting preferred.
- Two (2) years administrative experience as Department Chair, Associate Director, Assistant Director, Program Coordinator or Adult Education Manager is preferred.
- Experience successfully leading a department in long-range planning and budgeting, Active participation or exposure to higher education accreditation procedures, articulation processes and program review.
- Bilingual in Spanish highly preferred
- Experience in activities that focus on assessment of student learning.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and multiculturalism in one’s work experience.
- Demonstrated ability to create a learning environment that fosters student success.
- Demonstrated ability to develop a technologically integrated environment that fosters innovation within a learning organization.
- Knowledge of federal and state requirements and regulations related to adult education.
- Proven experience in grant management preferred.
- Knowledge and experience in serving adult learners.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Majority of work performed in a general office environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization sponsored events and meetings.
