About the Department
The Senior Lift Station Operator is responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and monitoring of municipal wastewater lift stations. This role requires advanced technical knowledge, leadership ability, and a commitment to ensuring reliable service.
This position is designated as “essential personnel” and will serve as a member of the Emergency Management Team, required to report for duty during emergencies, natural disasters, or other critical events.
Position Duties
- Perform daily inspections and routine maintenance of pumps, motors, valves, electrical panels, and SCADA systems at lift stations.
- Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic equipment to minimize downtime.
- Monitor system performance, record operational data, and generate reports for management review.
- Respond to alarms, emergency situations, and after-hours callouts to restore service.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance schedules and maintain accurate service records.
- Supervise, mentor, and train junior operators and technicians in operational procedures and safety practices.
- Collaborate with engineering and public works staff on capital improvement projects and equipment upgrades.
- Manage inventory of parts, tools, and chemicals; request and track supplies as needed.
- Conduct confined space entries, lockout/tagout procedures, and other critical safety protocols.
- Assist with budgeting, cost estimates, and vendor coordination for lift station projects.
- Participate in inspections of lift stations and ensure corrective actions are implemented promptly.
- Maintain clear communication with management, field crews, and the public regarding outages, repairs, or planned maintenance.
- Serve as subject matter expert for troubleshooting SCADA alarms, electrical control systems, and pump performance analysis.
- Provide leadership during severe weather events, system failures, or emergency response operations.
- Operate vac trucks for cleaning and maintaining lift stations.
- Regular in-person attendance during City and department business hours, since face-to-face interaction and coordination of work with other employees, residents, or vendors, and all immediate access to documents or tools, or other resources located at the workplace is required.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of pump systems, hydraulics, and electrical controls.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and equipment manuals.
- Experience with SCADA monitoring and troubleshooting.
- The ability to perform heavy manual labor under adverse weather conditions.
- Skilled in the operation and maintenance of equipment and tools related to the position.
- The ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written.
- Ability to operate small hand tools and equipment.
- Ability to work rotational On Call assignments and Call Back services as assigned.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience working with lift stations and wastewater systems.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Technical or vocational training in mechanics, electrical systems, or wastewater operations preferred.
- Must possess and maintain a valid FL Driver’s License.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred, or the ability to obtain a CDL within six (6) months is required.
- Wastewater Collection System Operator certification or the ability to obtain within six (6) months is required.
- Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
- Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
- Ability to access, input and retrieve information from a computer.
- Safely enter and exit excavation sites, exposed to wet muddy conditions.
- Moderate to Heavy (45 pounds and over) lifting and carrying.
- Walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, driving City vehicles/equipment.
Other Qualifications
- Must be available to work after hours, On-Call assignments, and perform Call-Back services.
- Works outside up to 100% of the time in various weather and environmental conditions. Potential exposure to heat, wind, rain, dust, dirt, noise, sewage, pond and creek water, confined spaces, uneven/slippery surfaces, below ground level, insects, native animals, and possibly chemicals.
