About the role

Product managers have a passion for connecting customers with products that exceed their expectations. The Global Product Manager has primary responsibility for the long term success of a broad product portfolio with an emphasis on portfolio performance from the growth stage through end of life. Working closely with senior leadership, business management and Commercial Product Managers, the Global Product Manager drives optimal performance of the core product portfolio, ensuring the portfolio plan is aligned with sales, and operational strategies to generate profitable product line growth.   The successful Global Product Manager is the company champion of long term product portfolio performance, driving improvement initiatives across all functions within the organization, while ensuring all levels and functions share a common understanding of how the portfolio strategy leads to customer satisfaction and Southco’s success.

What you will be doing

  1. Drive Strategic Alignment:  Work collaboratively with the executive and regional leadership teams (Functional VP’s, Managing Directors, General Managers, Business Development Management, and Senior Operations Management) to drive an aligned long term product strategy, ensuring that functional, regional, and operational goals are aligned to optimize Southco’s resource deployment and long term growth and profitability
  2. Product portfolio strategy:  Responsible for development of the long term product strategy for a broad portfolio of products.  Develops and maintains detailed product road maps for all assigned products.  Combine direct customer feedback with input from Southco’s business units to identify and advocate for new product and line extensions to serve global customer needs and maintain competitive leadership.  Provide direction to the regional teams responsible for the development of modified or customized product to balance immediate customer needs with the optimization of product platform opportunities.   Develop and manage pricing strategy to maximize profitability including customization specific to the needs of each region, market, and channel. 
  3. Acquisition Integration:  Drive the integration of acquired products and businesses into the Southco portfolio.  Assess acquired products, evaluate the global market potential, and integrate into the product portfolio strategy.  Activities include development of roadmaps, and pricing models for complementary products, as well as a rationalization plan for products that do not fit the global product strategy.   Oversee and direct the development of all materials necessary to extend new products and technologies throughout the organization, including product validation, training, and marketing communications material.
  4. Operational alignment:  Ensure that operational strategies align with the product portfolio strategy.  Provide direction to operations teams regarding cost reduction targets and operational improvements required to support the product strategy.  Assess customer impact and approve all significant changes in product manufacturing process or location.  Ensure alignment of operational capabilities with customer demand and global consumption.  Assess major capital equipment requests to ensure they are aligned with future customer needs and product strategy.
  5. Product Development & Specification Control: Approve any specification changes for existing products.  Champion the development of new products & line extensions.  Develop and approve specifications necessary to drive new product development.   Documentation will include Marketing Specifications, Business plans, Marketing Launch plans, Project requests and Engineering Change Requests.   Specify, develop and/or approve training and sales tools for all products, including product catalog and print assets, physical demonstration panels, and web content.  Provide direction to marketing communications and e-commerce teams.
  6. Competitive intelligence:  Stimulate and initiate keen sensitivity and awareness to competitor information,  Including the planning, consolidation and supervision of ongoing competitor intelligence activities and benchmarking.  Initiate product performance benchmarking and analysis of competitive market and channel strategies.  Monitor and assess new competitive threats.
  7. Portfolio monitoring & regulation:  Monitor and assess all aspects of product performance, including service level analysis, quality and profitability analysis.  Plan, substantiate and approve product pricing; including regional and channel specific pricing, for assigned products consistent with strategic business objectives and competitive market positioning.  Define corrective actions where appropriate to ensure optimization of quality, delivery, cost, and margin.  Develop and execute a rationalization plan for end of life products .

About you

  1. Bachelor degree in Engineering or similar technical background
  2. Minimum five years of experience in product marketing, sales, customer service or engineering.  Ten years experience preferred.
  3. Solid leadership and problem solving capabilities. Ability to lead across functional and geographic boundaries.  Strong  communication skills and influence capabilities.
  4. Ability to perform complex business analysis
  5. Ability to Travel 10-15%
