Position Summary

This position is essential to allow our guests to experience early season skiing and riding.   Snow makers allow us to have the various terrain parks located throughout the mountain to enhance the guest experience.

Primary Responsibilities/Duties                                             

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Be able to start and stop snow guns both manually and remotely.
  • Knowledge of wet bulb and number of banks to run based on temperature.
  • Determine angle and direction of guns based on wind and weather conditions as well as oscillating versus stationary.
  • Trouble shoot frozen and/or non-functioning guns.
  • Make gun runs through out shift to verify all guns are working.
  • Ability to change actuators and manually close hydrants. 
  • Monitor and prepare for winter weather and wind conditions.
  • Work closely with, and assist other departments such as Grooming, Ski Patrol, Lift Operations, Fleet maintenance, Terrain parks, Special Events and other departments as needed.
  • Recognize and report unusual noises and/or performance issues to supervisor
  • Record and report any potential hazards and assist in emergency situations
  • Be familiar with and follow the policies and procedures outlined in the snow making manual
  • Abide by all mountain rules and regulations at all times
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have a valid, unrestricted driver’s license
  • Mechanical understanding of basic operations and maintenance of equipment
  • Knowledge of Powderhorn Mountain Resort terrain and operations is an asset
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Basic computer skills 
  • Must understand and adhere to all safety policies and procedures
  • Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions and make on the spot decisions depending on the weather
  • Must be able to use good judgment in emergency and hazardous situations

Education/Certification

High School Diploma or GED

Experience

  • Previous Snow making experience preferred.
  • Heavy equipment operation experience (preferably dozer and blade experience)                 

WORKING CONDITIONS:                    

  • Must be able to navigate slippery and uneven terrain
  • Requires working outdoors in extreme weather  (cold, wind, snow, rain, heat), night time and on uneven terrain
  • Lifting, dragging heavy hoses and snow guns, snowmobiles, and snow shoveling
  • Use of snowmobiles, UTV’s and ATVs as transportation in adverse weather and rough terrain
  • Outdoors at high altitude (9850 feet and above) and temperatures well below 0.
  • Must use proper footwear, eye and hearing protection and gloves

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physically able to perform the job
  • Be able to lift and carry at least 50 lbs.
  • Ability to walk, bend over and move equipment on steep and uneven terrain
  • Must have normal vision and hearing
  • Must have the ability to work outdoors in extreme cold and wet weather conditions
  • Must be physically capable of operating and maintaining equipment

WORK SCHEDULE:

12 Hour shifts 

Must be able to work overnight shifts as well as weekends and holidays
