We are looking for a Research Associate who would be able to contribute to an NIHR funded programme development grant with Pennine Foundation NHS Trust looking at Developing a Single Session Intervention for Children and Young People Referred with Mental Health Concerns.
This is an exciting study building on a programme of research looking at mental health services for children and young people and working with a team of researchers drawn from a range of disciplines. The successful candidate will work on a number of work packages simultaneously: a scoping review; a survey; coordinating study meetings; contributing to writing up the study.
In this role, you will:
- Work with a large multi-disciplinary team based in Cardiff University and Pennine Foundation NHS Trust
- Focus particularly on two work packages: conducting a scoping review and formulating, distributing and analysing a survey. Both will be under supervision, so there is opportunity to develop your skill set.
- Work with the McPin Foundation who are co-ordinating the views of young people and feeding into this project
- Have experience in health or social care research related to either children and young people or mental health
- Can work on more than one work package simultaneously
- Are able to write research reports and draft high-quality publications in a timely fashion
This role is eligible to be offered on a blended working basis, meaning that as well as spending time working on campus you may spend some time working from another location, e.g. your home. This position is part-time 21 hours per week and fixed term until 31 July 2026. The post is available from 1st August 2025 and is funded for 12 months.
Salary: £41,064 - £46,049 per annum, pro-rata (Grade 6). Please note that it is not expected that we will appoint above Grade 6, point 32, currently £41,064 per annum, pro-rata.

Job Description
Working directly on a major new project funded by the NIHR Programme Development Grant, to conduct high-quality research and to publish in the area of care for children and young people with mental health problems. In fulfilling their responsibilities, the postholder will pursue excellence in research and inspire others to do the same.
The postholder will be employed to work on a 12-month project which combines scoping the literature related to single session interventions (SSI) for children and young people referred with mental health concerns with a survey of models of SSI across England and Wales.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Research
- To conduct research within the area of mental health care for children and young people and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University including by the production of measurable outputs.
- To attend and or present at conferences/seminars at a local and national level as required
- To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting
- To prepare research ethics and research governance applications as appropriate
- To participate in School research activities.
- To build and create networks both internally and externally to the University, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects
- To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.

Qualifications and Education
- Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or equivalent, or relevant industrial experience
- An established expertise and proven portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience within the following research fields:
- health and social care
- evidence review and survey methods
- Knowledge of current status of research in specialist field
- Proven ability to publish in national/international journals, national/international conferences and/or other research outputs
- Knowledge and understanding of competitive research funding to be able to develop applications to funding bodies
- Proven ability in effective and persuasive communication
- Ability to supervise the work of others to focus team efforts and motivate individuals
- Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and team-working within work
- Proven ability to work without close supervision
- Relevant professional qualification(s)
- Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community.
- Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the research activities of the School.
