Studio Technician – Ceramics Studio
Job Title: Ceramics Studio Area Technician
Reports To: Dean (with day-to-day direction from the Ceramics Studio Coordinator)
Status: Academic-Year, Non-Teaching Position
The Ceramics Studio Area Technician is responsible for maintaining and supporting the ceramics studios and equipment used by both the Pratt Munson College of Art and Design and the Munson Community Arts (MCA) programs. This includes all ceramics spaces such as:
Handbuilding and throwing studios
Glaze lab
Kiln areas (including kiln shed)
Clay mixing room
Related storage and workspaces
This is a full-time, academic-year, non-teaching position, scheduled at 35 hours per week, with the possibility of some weekend hours to support events or coverage needs. The Technician reports to the Dean and receives daily guidance from the Ceramics Studio Coordinator and ceramics instructors working with both adult and youth classes.

Essential Job Functions
Studio Maintenance & Support
Ensure ceramics studios are clean, organized, and ready for use
Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on studio equipment
Clean, remove glaze, and apply kiln wash to kiln shelves
Load and unload kilns as needed
Safety
Maintain a clean, dust-free, and safe work environment
Use proper safety equipment and follow established cleaning procedures
Enforce and uphold safety protocols across all ceramics spaces
Materials & Supplies
Mix, maintain, and distribute clay for classes, including reclaimed clay
Prepare and maintain glazes, slips, and washes
Assist with receiving and storing supply deliveries
Track inventory and order tools, materials, and equipment as needed
Organization
Maintain high standards of cleanliness and organization
Keep all tables, shelving, bats, floors, and storage areas clean and orderly
Scheduling & Events
Occasionally assist on weekends for events or coverage needs
Assist with setup and support for special events
Communication & Community Engagement
Respond to faculty and student inquiries promptly and professionally
Provide in-studio support for classes and assist in onboarding new instructors and work-study students
Maintain positive, respectful relationships with faculty, students, and staff
Report concerns or issues to the Ceramics Coordinator and Administration
Additional Duties
Complete other related tasks and special projects as assigned by the Ceramics Coordinator
May be called upon to serve on Munson interdivisional committees
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong working knowledge of ceramic studio equipment, including wheels, mixers, hand and power tools, and kilns (electric, gas, wood, salt)
Ability to troubleshoot, maintain, and perform minor repairs on equipment
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Strong communication skills and a collaborative work style
Understanding of safety procedures and best practices in a ceramic's environment
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Studio Technician does not have direct responsibilities for hiring, termination, performance appraisals or performance counseling.
COMPUTER MACHINE & EQUIPMENT SKILLS:
Basic personal computer skills that include the ability to send/receive e-mail messages, post information to a database or spreadsheet, and perform basic word processing tasks. Requires experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and various software programs.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES & DEMANDS:
The Studio Technician is called upon to stand, walk, sit and lift 15 lbs. frequently. In addition, the Studio Technician position requires the ability to speak, talk and have the dexterity to perform photography and printmaking tasks using specific related equipment.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
A majority of work is performed in an internal environment.
The final candidate will be required to complete a post-offer, pre-employment background check.
