About the Department
The City is seeking a dependable and hardworking individual to join our team as a Building Maintenance Worker Assistant. This part-time position is ideal for someone with basic experience in building maintenance, construction, plumbing, or electrical work who is looking to expand their skills while contributing to the upkeep and safety of City facilities.
While working under the supervision of the Building Maintenance Crew, the Assistant will perform a variety of unskilled and semiskilled tasks related to the repair, maintenance, and improvement of City buildings and facilities. The work includes everything from basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical repairs to cleaning, painting, and grounds support. The ideal candidate is reliable, safety-conscious, able to follow directions, and enjoys hands-on work. This position requires physical labor, working in a variety of weather conditions, and may include exposure to potentially hazardous materials.
The current departmental need is for coverage Wednesday through Friday, from 6:30 AM to 4:00 PM (approximately 27 hours) and is subject to change based on the needs of the department.
A thorough background check including a Live Scan and an administrative background (which includes work history, criminal history, drug/alcohol history, credit check, education, reference contacts, etc.) is mandatory for this position.
Please note, this part-time position is at-will and does not include any fringe benefits, aside from any benefits required by federal or state law.
Position Duties
Minimum Qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
Building Maintenance Crew:
- Performs a variety of unskilled and semiskilled work on City buildings and structures; constructs framing, floors and roofing, repairs walls and replaces broken windows and glass; constructs and installs doors; builds articles of wood such as platforms or podiums; repairs and installs various types of wood cabinets, counters, shelving, and repairs stairways; maintains carpentry equipment and tools.
- Performs minor electrical repair work; installs electrical outlets, lines, switches, conduits, circuits and circuit breakers, voltage regulators and related electrical equipment, plugs and switches; operates, troubleshoots, replaces parts and makes maintenance repairs to air conditioning, heating, and other stationary building equipment; wires and maintains lighting and other circuits in various types of buildings; maintains electrical equipment and tools; replaces light bulbs.
- Performs semiskilled plumbing maintenance work; replaces and repairs, inspects, installs, alters and maintains plumbing systems and fixtures, including minor repairs to water, sewer and gas lines, valves, drains, sinks, toilets, faucets, pipes, drains and other plumbing installations; clear clogged sewer and water lines; maintains plumbing equipment and tools.
- Builds forms and mixes, pours, and finishes concrete.
- Prepares work for painting by cleaning surfaces, patches, fills, tapes, textures and sands, paints building and structure interiors and exteriors, applies paint, varnishes and lacquers by using brushes, rollers, or spray equipment; mixes paint; does sign lettering on wood; maintains painting equipment and tools; provides information on the time and materials it took to complete the job.
- Performs building cleaning work including scrubbing, mopping, sealing, and waxing floors and cleaning and disinfecting bathrooms.
- Maintains and dispenses building and office supplies.
- Performs other building maintenance duties as assigned.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
- Uses and purposes of basic tools and equipment employed in repair and maintenance work;
- Basic construction and maintenance methods and terminology;
- Safe work practices.
Ability to:
- Perform a variety of unskilled and semiskilled maintenance tasks in construction and maintenance and repair of City buildings and facilities;
- Operates motorized equipment skillfully and safely;
- Make general repairs to buildings
- Perform heavy manual labor;
- Lift and carry equipment, tools, materials and other heavy objects;
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
- Read and write at a level for successful job performance;
- Maintain effective working relationships with employees, government officials, contractors and the general public.
- Work outdoors in all types of weather, in and around traffic for long periods, walk and climb ladders, stoop, safely lift and carry heavy objects weighing up to 100 pounds
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to acquire the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
A minimum of one year of work experience in building maintenance, construction, electrical and/or mechanical disciplines.
and
Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
LICENSES AND/OR SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a valid and required appropriate California Driver's License (Class C) issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Must be willing to work outdoors and in all weather conditions and with exposure to traffic and potentially hazardous substances; may be required to work outside of normal business hours.
- Must be able to perform heavy manual labor associated with assigned maintenance tasks which may include lifting objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work involves considerable physical exertion, including heavy lifting. Most work is done outdoors, and will be performed in all weather conditions including inclement weather. Involves exposure to the hazards associated with working around traffic and heavy equipment. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for job assignments; must comply with all safety and CalOSHA standard.
