Description

Under the general direction of the Director of Branch Services & Engagement, coordinates and evaluates all personnel, services, programs, and outreach for the Trails West and Sugar Creek branches. Models excellent customer service both with patrons and coworkers, breaking down barriers and using, and empowering staff to use values based service.


This is a full-time exempt position with a starting salary of $63,026, with excellent benefits. Position is open until filled. 


Schedule

Monday - Friday: 8:30 am - 5 pm with one evening per week and one weekend per month rotation.


Locations

Trails West: 11401 East 23rd Street, Independence, MO, 64052. 

Sugar Creek: 102 South Sterling Avenue, Sugar Creek, MO, 64054. 


Job Duties (Essential Functions)

  1. Plans, coordinates, monitors and evaluates goals and objectives for branch; partners and cooperates with other departments and library locations to develop and implement effective services, programs, and procedures; assists subordinate staff in developing and organizing programs and procedures.
  2. Directs personnel including library volunteers to assure productivity; interviews, selects, trains, schedules, coaches, and evaluates staff as appropriate; organizes, assigns, prioritizes, and reviews work; conveys and disseminates information to staff and staff concerns to management in a timely manner; successfully handles conflicts among staff.
  3. Directs and provides the delivery of high quality library services including reference, information, reader's advisory, community referral, and services for teens and children to facilitate effective use of library resources; maintains a high level of competency in all desk procedures; maintains adequate staffing levels within budgetary limits; sets standards in accordance with library policy; provides consultation to staff.
  4. Maintains communication and builds effective working relationships with the public and other library staff members; evaluates effectiveness of services offered; maintains strong partnerships with other library departments promoting collaboration, and effectively managing change through communication.
  5. Conducts public outreach programs to increase awareness and support of library programs and services; develops relationships and partnerships with organizations in branch service area; participates in public speaking engagements and networking events.
  6. Partners with Collection Development to maintain strong, up to date, vibrant collections; completes proper collection maintenance and communicates collection needs to appropriate staff.
  7. Keeps abreast of current trends and developments in profession; performs duties requiring the exercise of professional skill, initiative, and independent judgement.
  8. Assists with formulation of library goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  9. Prepares monthly report of activities and submits annual budget requests.
  10. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility in management of appropriate branch budgets.
  11. Ensure proper staff coverage. This may include adjusting or augmenting own schedule if other staff cannot be found to provide coverage.
  12. Performs other related work and undertakes special projects as assigned.

Branch Specific Duties

  • Sugar Creek and Trails West are designated United States Village Post Offices. Employees at these branches additionally sell stamps and accept priority flat rate boxes and envelopes.
  • Sugar Creek and Trails West receive United States Passport applications, employees at those branches assist in processing applications and train new staff on the process. Staff must meet requirements of 22 CFR § 51.22 to act as a Passport Acceptance Agent.

Requirements

  1. Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with staff and public. Exhibits self-motivation with the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and manage changing priorities.
  2. Demonstrated ability to organize work effectively; lead, direct, and coach personnel; and plan programs and services.
  3. Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of professional library work as practiced in public libraries.
  4. Thorough knowledge of current management practices.
  5. Superior oral and written communication skills.
  6. Proven skills in planning, goal identification, and achievement of objectives.
  7. Demonstrated ability to learn operation of electronic circulation system and catalog.
  8. Demonstrated advanced computer skills; competency in technology skills used in libraries.
  9. Demonstrated ability to give and follow oral and written instructions.
  10. Ability to work during all hours of branch operations should staffing need arise.
  11. Staff at Sugar Creek and Trails West must meet requirements of 22 CFR § 51.22 to act as a Passport Acceptance Agent.
  12. Staff performing Notary Services must meet the requirements listed in MO Notary Handbook.
  13. Ability to speak and understand English is required. Additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages utilized in Jackson County, MO, including Spanish, American Sign Language, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.

Required Education and Experience

  • Extensive customer service experience in a patron or customer facing environment.
  • Experience as a supervisor.
  • Master's degree in Library / Information Science or an equivalent combination of education, relevant work experience, and life experience.
