WHAT YOU'LL DO

The Director of EMS provides effective leadership and oversight of the EMS department while ensuring high-quality emergency medical services across the facility. In addition to leading daily operations and personnel, the Director actively provides Basic Life Support (BLS) care in accordance with West Virginia Office of EMS protocols. The Director is also responsible for maintaining readiness of ambulances and equipment, while keeping all required skills and certifications current.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for:

  • Conduct daily check-offs of equipment, ambulances, and fire apparatus to ensure readiness for emergency response.
  • Perform triage and provide a variety of emergency medical treatments as a BLS provider, including ongoing patient care while en route to the hospital.
  • Adhere to West Virginia State Office of EMS protocols, including both invasive and non-invasive medical treatments. Skills/therapies include but are not limited to: patient assessment, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation, medication administration, application of dressings and bandages, advanced airway management, and immobilization.
  • Operate all emergency vehicles and equipment in a safe and professional manner.
  • Collaborate with other emergency services personnel to coordinate patient care and ensure safe, effective teamwork.
  • Employ safe lifting, moving, and extrication techniques.
  • Serve as a mentor/preceptor for new EMTs, Paramedics, and Firefighters.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with clients, coworkers, and over radio channels.
  • Complete run sheets and all required documentation thoroughly and accurately.
  • Coordinate EMS crew efforts in safe extrication and rescue operations.
  • Establish and manage landing zones for emergency medical evacuations when required.
  • Oversee daily operations of the EMS department.
  • Perform administrative duties including staff scheduling, equipment maintenance coordination, employee training and precepting, record and certification management, disciplinary actions when necessary, inventory oversight, quality assurance, and monthly department checks.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain all required certifications for the position.

Requirements

Job Requirements and Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 7+ years of progressive EMS and Firefighting experience, including active 911 response
  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory or management experience, including scheduling, training, and performance oversight of staff or volunteers
  • National Registry Paramedic or West Virginia Paramedic Certification (or ability to obtain WV certification within 6 months)
  • West Virginia Firefighter I & II (or equivalent Pro Board/IFSAC certification)
  • Valid Driver’s License and Emergency Vehicle Operator Certification (EVOC)
  • BLS CPR certification
  • ITLS (International Trauma Life Support) or PHTLS (Prehospital Trauma Life Support)
  • PEPP (Pediatric Education for Prehospital Providers)
  • Hazmat Awareness certification
  • MCI 1 & 2 training
  • NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800
  • Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office or equivalent)
  • Ability to work some weekends and evenings as needed
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management, Fire Science, Healthcare Administration, or related field

Leadership & Professional Skills:

  • Strong leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution abilities
  • Proven ability to mentor, train, and develop EMS and Fire personnel
  • Experience coordinating with external agencies (fire, EMS, law enforcement, hospitals)
  • Ability to balance administrative responsibilities with active field response duties

Physical Requirements:

Physical effort involves for indefinite periods of time, mobility within an office and field environment; subject to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, toxic chemicals, dust/mites, fumes, odors, explosives, firearms and ammunition, electrical, and mechanical hazards; exposure to extreme heat or cold, noise, heights; walking, twisting body, stooping, standing, squatting, sorting, sitting, seeing, hearing, running, pushing, pulling, lifting, dragging; carrying in excess of 150 lbs., lifting above shoulder level, use of both hands and legs; climbing, crawling, reading, critical decision making. Stress may also be encountered due to high acuity situations.
