The New York Philharmonic connects with millions of music lovers each season through live concerts in New York and around the world, as well as broadcasts, recordings, and education programs. After returning to a transformed David Geffen Hall in 2022, the Orchestra is acting on a renewed commitment to building on a legacy of more than 180 years, serving as a platform for today’s greatest musical artists and connecting with our communities. Gustavo Dudamel will become the Philharmonic’s Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Music and Artistic Director in the 2026–27 season.

Teaching Artist (Violin/Strings Specialist) Location: Southeastern Brooklyn

Schedule: 3 days/week | 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM

School Year: 2025–2026

Rate:  $74-$104/hour

Rates depend on distance traveled for work and length of workday


The New York Philharmonic is seeking a dynamic and organized Teaching Artist with a specialty in violin/upper strings and a strong background in early childhood education. If you're a creative educator who shines in both one-on-one and group setting, and you're eager to spark a lifelong love of music in young learners and their families, we’d love to meet you.

This role is part of a vibrant pre-kindergarten program in southeastern Brooklyn that will provide violin instruction three times a week. You’ll be joining a supportive team committed to nurturing the next generation of musicians through joyful, high-quality instruction.

Responsibilities

  • Teach violin to students ranging from beginner to advanced levels in both group and individual settings 3 days a week.
  • Develop and implement engaging, age-appropriate lesson plans
  • Manage classroom behavior and maintain a structured learning environment
  • Introduce students to a diversity of repertoire, from classical to contemporary
  • Help students develop strong violin technique and transferrable knowledge such as vocabulary related to learning, playing and discussing all types of music
  • Prepare students for concerts, recitals, auditions, and community events
  • Participate in Teaching Artist ongoing professional development and required events
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, school officials and fellow staff
  • Support a positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment

 

 Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of teaching experience in a public school or after-school music program
  • Experience working with Pre-K through 2nd grade students in group settings
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills
  • Able and willing to travel beyond Manhattan to locations such as Southeast Brooklyn, Staten Island, Eastern Queens, or the Bronx.
  • Able to pass PETS Department of Education fingerprinting and background check
  • Creative, flexible, and passionate about teaching music to children with a wide range of abilities and skills including English Language Learners and children with special needs
  • Reliable and committed to scheduled lesson and class times with minimal substitutions
  • Able to give written feedback on student progress
