Founded in 1771, San Gabriel is located 10 miles northeast of Los Angeles and is the birthplace of the greater metropolitan region. Today, San Gabriel is a burgeoning community of 40,000 with several neighborhoods of aesthetic and historical significance, outstanding schools, and excellent public amenities. The heart of San Gabriel is its Mission District, a culturally rich and historic center that blends the charm of early California with a modern-progressive experience. The Mission District is home to the San Gabriel Mission and Mission Playhouse and host of several festivals and events that attract patrons from all over the region, including the annual Dumpling & Beer Festival and Lunar New Year Festival. All of this and much more make San Gabriel a great place to live, work, and play.
THE POSITION
The City of San Gabriel has an exciting opportunity for Public Works Director. This position serves on the City's executive team and works under the general direction of the City Manager. The Public Works Director oversees a department comprised of six divisions - administration, engineering, field operations, parks and facilities, wastewater operations, and fleet maintenance - and 40 full-time staff.
The City of San Gabriel is stable, but continually looking to develop. The stability of San Gabriel comes from a tenured City Council, Executive Team, and core employees, including many in the Public Works Department. The City's fiscal status is strong with a prudent fund balance to navigate future uncertainties. The City's main focus for the past few years has been prioritizing street improvements. Today, because of that priority, San Gabriel has a PCI that has improved from 59 to 82.
San Gabriel has also just recently approved a Sewer Master Plan, identifying several sewer projects that the new Public Works Director will be implementing over the next few years. Funded by Sewer User Fees, there are sufficient funds necessary to implement a hearty sewer improvement program over the next several years.
Finally, the City is undergoing a space needs analysis for a renovated or new public safety building. A tax measure is being explored to finance a state-of-the-art building that will house the Police Department and potentially a joint use with administrative personnel in the Fire Department. The new Public Works Director will play a pivotal role in managing the largest project in the City's history!
The City is now focused on its future, and with that looking for someone that has a passion for Public Works and its team. The successful candidate will be someone who has the capability to take our stable foundation to the next level by developing and managing current programs, projects, and employees, directly impacting their success in the future. Begin the path to becoming part of that successful future today!
