Job Title: Environmental Specialist

Position Summary

Coordinates environmental programs to ensure compliance with established policies and EPA / TDEC regulations. Coordinates inspections and tours of facilities to detect existing or potential accident, spill, and environmental hazards; and recommends corrective or preventive actions. Conducts Team Member training programs in labeling, ISO, recycling, and waste, and other Team Member environmental programs. Investigates environmental incidents. Prepares legally required reports and any regular or special reports for annual reporting requirements, monthly meeting, or inspections (in-house or external). May serve as liaison with local fire emergency responders, spill / clean up crews, and other outside agencies regarding environmental/ ISO programs. Supervises the SPCC and SWPPP programs for the company. Oversees the administration of the ISO, SPCC, SWPPP, Air, Water, Hazardous Waste and other applicable programs as needed. Responsible for working with carbon neutral team to ensure plant goals are achieved and working with AWA on other required reports.

Maintains safe and healthful environment by identifying and anticipating concerns and hazards; developing and enforcing systems, policies, and procedures.

Position Responsibilities

The incumbent is expected to perform the following functions that the company has determined are essential to this position:

· Investigates environmental incidents and prepares reports.

· Experience with RCRA and Haz Waste Management.

· Understand and focus to keep the ISO14001 (Environmental) certification.

· Updating Air permit and change points in the facility.

· Storm water permit and checks.

· Waste water analysis and specification control.

· Support with carbon neutral programs.

· Plans and implements environmental / ISO policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations.

· Inspects organization facilities to detect existing or potential environmental hazards, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.

· Provides information to warn of potential and actual environmental hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions.

· Leads the investigation of environmental incidents / alerts and cooperates in the preparation of material and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.

· Oversees weekly, monthly, quarterly and/ or annual inspections as needed for regulatory programs or ISO.

· Maintains environmental files and records.

· Confers with departmental supervisors, manufacturing representatives, and regulatory agency staff to discuss problems, to develop tests to detect hazardous leaks, and to design plans to monitor equipment and safety programs.

· Coordinates installation, operates, and maintains equipment which monitors air, land, and/or water.

· Interprets data and observations to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry guidelines and advises management accordingly.

· Selects and is able to give advice on personal protective equipment.

· Maintains working knowledge of the new technologies developed by the industry and government regulators.

· Participates in departmental staff meetings and attends other meetings as needed and seminars.

· Oversees disaster recovery plans.

· Represents the organization in community or industry environmental groups and programs.

· Oversees environmental policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.

· Regular attendance is required.

· Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

Qualifications:

· Must maintain knowledge of legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting Environmental functions.

· Must ensure policies, procedures, and reporting are in compliance.

· Must strictly adhere to company policies, rules, and regulations with regard to health and safety.

· Must have effective oral and written communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills.

Essential skills and experience:

 

· Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university, or four (4) to six (6) years related experience and high school diploma or G.E.D., or equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Ability to objectively coach Team Members and management through complex, difficult, and emotional issues.

· Ability to research and analyze various types of data information.

· Ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve problems or issues, by using judgment that is consistent with standards, practices, policies, procedures, regulations or government law.

· Ability to organize and prioritize work.

· Ability to effectively deal with others, especially Team Members, to enlist needed cooperation in implementing regulatory requirements.

· Ability to deal with regulatory agencies, consultants and other contractor personnel as required.

· Working knowledge of Federal and State (Tennessee) occupational safety and health regulations, TDEC, NEPA, ANSI, with a strong knowledge of OSHA regulations.

Nonessential skills and experience:

 

· Bachelor’s degree in a safety science/engineering/industrial hygiene discipline is preferred.

· Distinct knowledge of ISO 14001

· Knowledge of chemical manufacturing operations.

· Knowledge of aluminum die casting operations.

· Advanced computer proficiency

 

Reporting to this position: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
